The Ang-yi or chinese secret societies of Thailand. Understanding of a total social phenomenon
Chinese secret societies have been present in Thailand for centuries. The author explains the history of the triads in this country from the early 19th (when Thaï official records began to mention the Ang-yi) to the early 20th centuries
as a total social fact. In 1897 when registration became necessary for all Chinese organizations some preferred to go underground. Since then many second-generation Chinese have climbed the social ladder to become full member of the Thaï society. - (GL)
