the subsequent philosophical discussions in their consequences for the empirical analysis of sociallife. The re-reading of phenomenology revolves around three issues : thinking the body as a phenomenal, lived body ; orientation and disorientation
in the directions and possibilities of sociallife ; and the phenomenological travel along the anti-/posthumanist lane. The paper concludes with a suggestion of a ‘new humanism’ that avoids the rationalist and self-righteous claims of the old ones but maintains
elements of the experiential dimension of sociallife, the acknowledgement of the other and the significance of human agency.

This paper investigates quality of life in Italian cities using the hedonic approach. It analyses micro-level data for housing and labour markets to estimate compensating differentials for local amenities within four domains: weather, environment
, services and society. Large compensating differentials in housing markets are found, whereas the effects on wages are relatively small. Quality of life varies substantially across space and is generally better in large and medium-sized cities of the Centre
