Social and economic inequality are an old theme of study. The attention for this problem with regard to underdeveloped countries is however a rather recent phenomenon. The present article, therefore, attempts to define the concepts of socio-economic
and spatial inequality. In addition, the various aproaches to the problem of spatial inequality are distinguished, based on the role and function attributed to the concept space. The authors discuss the characteristics of the various approaches. Moreover
, the final part of the article analyses the consequences of the various approaches to spatial inequality for government policy. (AGD).

This paper is concerned with the phenomenon of regional inequalities in Third World countries. In view of the lack of an adequate model of development, and thus of an acceptable general formulation of Third World regional inequalities, a more
particularistic analytic approach is suggested. This approach treats the phenomenon as the outcome of the articulation of exogenous political economic forces with the social and ecological characteristics of specific Third World societies. The approach
is demonstrated via an historical analysis of regional inequality in Uganda. In conclusion, the implications of this approach for policy and further research are assessed. (Revue).
In the case of the village of Birkama, the effects of agricultural transformation on social and economic inequality are studied. One of the most far reaching changes since independence was the installation of a banana project. The recruitment
of participants for the project, strengthened the position of the married men as opposed to that of women and of younger men, and favoured the larger, wealthier and powerful concessions. Althought the social stratification in its main characteristics remained
the same, the inequality in income increased the distance between the various layers. This situation is a result of government policy, in which some skillful farmers are favoured above other members of the society. (AGD).
