This article first analyses relationships among various indicators of social capital encompassing social networks, trust and civic norms and values. Second, it explores relationships among various indicators of social capital encompassing three
common dimensions: social networks, trust and civic norms and values. Third, research findings stress the importance of personal characteristics (age, education and economic activity) for residents' amount of social capital. It concludes that social
capital can be seen as an instrument in the activation of endogenous development potential of local communities, especially in peripheral regions.

The objective of this article is to identify the spatial variation of different forms of social capital in regions of Poland and then to test a hypothesis on the impact of this capital on regional economic development. The results demonstrate
that despite the existing differences between regions there are no significant relationships between levels of social capital and economic development. This may be explained either by low social capital levels or by the overall degree of Polish economic
development.
