differences in the processes of flow concentration on shale and sandstone slopes. Flow concentration and rill initiation apparently will not occur on sandstone slopes which lack a shale cap. Once rills have been initiated, they will continue to develop even
if the conditions necessary for their initiation are no longer fulfilled. In the badlands the relationship is exemplified by the continued development of rills on sandstones slopes even after capping shale units have disappeared.
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) investigations conducted on 2 open system pingos, Innerhytte pingo and Riverbed pingo, are described. Surface exposures suggest that both pingos are largely formed in weak Jurassic shales. Little evidence
for the presence of large bodies of massive ice was found. Strong subsurface reflections within the core of both pingos are interpreted as representing either the presence of alternating shale and ice units, or variations in the chemistry, ice crystal properties
in the Upper Engadin, southeastern Switzerland. This area consists of sedimentary rocks, mainly limestone and shale, and basement crystalline rocks, mainly gneiss, schist and granite.
The International Polar Year project Kinnvika - Arctic warming and impact research at 80° N
descriptions of some of the existing units are presented. The new lithostratigraphical unit : a Lower(?) to Middle Cambrian Black shale and limestone unit is proposed informally. In addition, a Middle(?) Cambrian to Lower Ordovician Dolostone-limestone unit
have been accumulated under stillwater conditions. The present paper shall contribute to solve the differing opinions about the petrogenesis of the silty sediments including their provenance.
The presence of ammonites in the Bonarelli Level (uppermost Cenomanian) of the Umbria-Marche Succession is reported here for the first time. The horizon studied has been recognised near Serra S. Abbondio, on the external limb of the Mt. Catria
anticline, where the upper part of the Scaglia Bianca Formation and the interbedded Bonarelli Level crop out. An ammonite, preserved as a bidimensional trace, has been found within one black shale bed which characterizes the level. The lack of diagnostic
