This study aims to demonstrate fundamental elements which underly the formation and evolution of rural settlement in Hungary, and at the same time suggest a hierarchical classification of settlement types. 27 variables have been analysed according
eight criteria| on the basis of the factor analysis, a hierarchical analysis has been achieved. Examination of the results concerning the administrative districts of Vas and Szolnok, while the whole study was made for all Hungarian rural settlements.
