This paper provides an analysis of the changing settlement hierarchy in the agglomeration of Budapest. In order to detect the relative success of the suburban settlements a special suburbanisation index has been developed by the author including
indices of the potential of human resources (e.g. rate of active population, balance of migration, rate of white collar employees etc.). On the basis of the index the changes of the relative order of settlements could be detected in the agglomeration
