Experiences and problems related with the attempts of the transformation of schoolsystems in the post-communist countries are discussed and the analysis of the Polish general secondary schools is analysed in details. The general change
in the educational system cannot be done merely by non-public schools if not supported by the public administration. The latter is, however, too inert to assist the changes and needs reconstruction itself. - (DG)

The A. observed that geography has a high status in Dutch secondary schools, that Dutch textbooks tend to apply major geographic themes to a specific regional setting, and that classes use active learning techniques. - (DWG)
The paper describes the current primary schoolsystem in the Netherlands as an extreme case of the possible compromises over the basic church-state relationship problem in Western society. It is characterized by very low thresholds for the funding
of privately run schools from public funds. There are Protestant schools of various denominations. Catholic schools and public schools. The institutional rules embedded in the political structure of the country and the religious composition of the population
are considered as crucial factors in the distribution of types of schools. These distributions are analysed for two important moments in time (the years around 1920 and 1970) and for various parts of the country.

Navajos ont réussi à avoir plus de contrôle dans leur système éducatif, notamment par la fondtion d'écoles bilingues et d'un collège pour Indiens. - (D. Rouvière).

The principle of a school in a network of relationships could be perceived from several different points of view, such as: 1) a school as a part of the educational system, interactions between institutions; 2) a school network in an area unit, its
character and connections to other characteristics of the region; 3) the relationships between a school and its local/regional community, including children, parents or representatives of the municipality. Although geography has a lot to say regarding
these issues, we find few articles dealing with geography of education, both in Czechia and throughout the world. Therefore, the aim of our contribution is to discuss the position of school within the types of networks mentioned, as an institution, which

School cartography is a special theory of designing and using maps within the more general system of theoretical cartography. In the G.D.R., school cartography has developed into an interdisciplinary research field of its own through close
cooperation among educal institutions and publishing houses, having a bias towards and receiving suggestions from practical work in schools. (HL).

Accessibility ; Education ; Geographical information system ; Louisiana ; Public sector ; Race ; Secondary education ; Time-distance ; United States of America
This study uses a Geographic Information System-based index to measure spatial accessibility of public high schools. The index is applied to the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area in 1990, 2000, and 2010. Overall, urban areas had consistently
worse accessibility scores compared with suburban and rural areas. High schools with more African American students tended to have poorer accessibility levels. Schools with lower accessibility tended to be associated with poorer average student
performance, and the effect strengthened between 2000 and 2010. In developing a better understanding of the accessibility of public high schools, this paper reaffirms the significance of space, place, and race, and challenges the notion of declining relevance
