The vigorous implementation of state policies of industrial development in Eastern Europe has attracted considerable attention among geographers and economists in recent years. Most geographers of the region, however, have adopted a static country
-by-country approach, with general issues discussed more cursorily. The A. has chosen a thematic presentation which stresses industrial trends in the region as a whole and allows meaningful comparison of differing national rates of growth. Particular
developments in the various countries (Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Yugoslavia) are brought out by case studies, and the A. draws heavily on East European sources and a close familiarity with the region. After
