- Rock moisture measurements : techniques, results, and implications for weathering
- Alps (The) ; Bavaria ; Freezing ; Geophysics ; Germany ; Measurement ; Methodology ; Moisture ; Precipitation ; Rainfall ; Rock ; Snow ; Weathering
- This paper presents 5 different techniques for obtaining rock moisture data. The results, obtained in study areas in the Bavarian Alps, make it clear that direct rainfall is the main source of rock moisture. The influence of snow is limited
- to the immediate vicinity of the snow fields and is not equally pronounced at different times and positions. Rock moisture levels are higher in summer than they are in winter. The moisture content of the rock is considered to be one of the major controlling factors

- Advance mechanisms of rock glaciers
- Alps (The) ; Creep ; Glacier dynamics ; Mountain ; Research technique ; Rock glacier ; Switzerland
- In this contribution, an approach to measure mass balance and transport within rock glacier fronts is presented. The technique is applied to Gruben and Suvretta rock glaciers, Swiss Alps. The results confirm a conveyor belt-like advance mechanism

- Photogrammetric analysis of Front Range rock glacier flow rates
- Air temperature ; Climatic warming ; Colorado ; Digital elevation model ; Geographical information system ; Glacier dynamics ; Mountain ; Photogrammetry ; Rock glacier ; United States of America
- Horizontal rock glacier displacements were measured by tracking large surficial rocks on temporal orthophotos from 1978, 1990, and 1999. Vertical change was measured by creating digital elevation models (DEMs) from digital stereopairs
- , then substracting elevations to detect change. Because horizontal and vertical change is minimal, Front Range rock glaciers appear to be adjusted with current climate.

- Composition and internal structures of a rock glacier on the strandflat of western Spitsbergen, Svalbard
- Arctic Region ; Geophysics ; Glaciation ; Ice ; Palaeoclimate ; Periglacial features ; Permafrost ; Quaternary ; Rock glacier ; Sea level ; Spitsbergen ; Svalbard
- This article presents data on composition and internal structure of a large lobe-shaped rock glacier at Nordenskiöldkysten, western Spitsbergen, based on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and direct current (DC) resistivity tomography measurements
- and to compare the results with previous results, particularly from simpler lobe-shaped glaciers, and tongue-shaped rock glaciers.

- Long-term flow measurements (1961-2002) of the Arapaho, Taylor, and Fair Rock glaciers, Front Range, Colorado
- Climatic change ; Colorado ; Creep ; Glacier ; Mountain ; Permafrost ; Rock glacier ; United States of America
- During the 1960s, several surveying networks were established on rock glaciers located in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. During, the summer of 2002, the A. re-established surveying networks, and obtained a 40-plus year record
- of flow. Rates of flow have remained consistent and suggest that rock glaciers in the Front Range are adjusted to the current climate, unlike some rock glaciers in the European Alps. The rock glaciers, however are not in a permanent steady state

- Geomorphological, hydrological and climatic significance of rock glaciers in the Andes of Central Chile (33-35°S)
- Air temperature ; Andes ; Chile ; Hydrology ; Moisture ; Mountain ; Periglacial features ; Permafrost ; Rock glacier ; Spatial distribution ; Volcanism
- Rock glaciers in the Andes of Santiago de Chile occupy c. 10% of the total land surface between 3500 and 4250m ASL.. An estimated water equivalent of 0.3 km3 per 1000 km2 of mountain area is stored within them; this value is one order of magnitude
- higher than in the Swiss Alps. Climate data indicate that the lowest occurences of active rock glaciers in the Andes of Santiago are not in equilibrium with modern climate. Relict features are found as low as at 2630 m ASL, implying a depression
- of the mean annual air temperature of at least c. 5.5°C. South of Santiago, active rock glacier distribution ends at 35° 15'S due to lower topography, young volcanism and increased humidity.

- Australian rock coasts : review and prospects
- Studies of Australian rock coasts (except carbonate reefs) are reviewed and considered in view of recent process and morphological studies. The unique nature of the Australian coast, its geographical distribution and relative stability mean
- that it is a productive environment in which to research fundamental questions concerning rock coasts. Future research directions are identified, specifically in the areas of processes, morphology and modelling.

- Effect of rock fragment embedding on the aeolian deposition of dust on stone-covered surfaces

- Recent and Holocene dynamics of a rock glacier system : the example of Langtalkar (Central Alps, Austria)
- Alps (The) ; Austria ; C 14 dating ; Creep ; Dendrochronology ; Geodesy ; Holocene ; Mass movement ; Mountain ; Photogrammetry ; Rock glacier
- Langtalkar rock glacier represents a closed complex system of debris transportation within a sharply limited cirque in which an estimation of age is possible with the help of the remnants of Late Glacial and Holocene glaciers. The aim

- the igneous and metamorphic rocks of Ontario. Sandstones from a sloping platform in the macrotidal Bay of Fundy and argillites from a horizontal, mesotidal platform in Gaspé, Québec were the most susceptible rock types. The results suggest that downwearing
- rates decrease with elevation within the intertidal zone, probably beacause rocks require much longer to desorb than to absorb water.
