Sándor Radó was gifted cartographic draughtsman, applying his skills to the production of atlases and other compendia, but Radó’s role as a Soviet intelligence agent operating across continental Europe served to occlude aspects of his self. The one
previously published biography of Radó is thought to be unreliable and possibly written by himself. Radó’s cover for intelligence activities was as director of a press agency, run out of various European cities during the 1930s and 1940s. These geo-agencies
employed fellow Soviet agents and officers as journalists and so Radó’s intelligence network grew. In 1956, following the Soviet reinvasion of Hungary, Radó became director of the cartographic division of the Hungarian State Office of Land Survey
and influence, Radó directed his efforts to the Sovietizing of Hungarian academic geography, driving forward Marxist–Leninist ideology through various geographical debates. - (HC)
