This article examines subaltern empowerment in the Geoweb through the tensions between publicity and privacy. First, it analyses the theoretical lineage of empowerment work in Critical GIS and geoweb literature. Second, it uses work with the Maijuna
indigenous people of Peru as a case study to begin a discussion about how the political goals of disempowered people may be best obtained through both public and private uses of the geoweb. Finally, it attempts to open a technical discussion of new research
areas related to the importance of both privacy and publicity in achieving political empowerment through the geoweb.
Spatial patterns of private sector and public sector non-agricultural jobs in rural Northeast Thailand

This article examines the spatial patterns of private sector and public sector non-agricultural jobs in rural Northeast Thailand. The results show that public jobs are over-represented in rural–remote regions, driving up the mean wage of this type
of region. When considering private sector employment only, spatial wage and income differentials do exist, showing that workers in remote areas are economically more disadvantaged than workers in peri-urban area.
