This work analyses the estimation of winter season (October 1 to May 31) precipitation over a high altitude catchment (Val di Peio) of the Eastern Italian Alps. The extrapolation of precipitation over un-gauged areas is problematic in this basin due
to the combined effect of measurement errors and orographic effects. The study is based on the availability of long term series of weather data, snow observations and glacier mass balance measurements. The error in precipitation measurement at the uppermost
weather station was assessed by comparison with snow water equivalent data. The error estimates were consistent with the outcomes of a precipitation correction model, with the aerodynamic correction as its main component. This correction procedure was used
to compute correction factors for the entire precipitation gauge network. This paper highlights the need for precipitation correction in precipitation analyses over snow-dominated mountain areas. This study also provides evidence of a considerable interannual
variability in the correction factors for snow at the uppermost weather station. Further improvements in precipitation estimations would require an analysis of the dominant processes controlling this variability. - (NF)

This study, based on daily precipitation data from 47 representative stations in the North China Plain (NCP) records passed the homogeneity test, analyzed the trend and amplitude of variation in monthly, seasonal and annual precipitation, annual
maximum continuous no-rain days, annual rain days, rainfall intensity, and rainfall extremes from 1960 to 2007, using the Mann-Kendall (M-K) test and Sen’s slope estimator. It was concluded that the changing trend of precipitation in NCP had an apparent
seasonal and regional pattern, i.e., precipitation showed an obvious increasing trend in winter, but a decreasing trend in the rainy season (July to September), and the changing trend was more apparent in the northern part than in the southern and middle
parts. This implies that with global warming, seasonal variation of precipitation in NCP tends to decline with an increasing of precipitation in winter season, and a decreasing in rainy season, particularly in the sub-humid northern part.

The AA. examined historical winter-season relationships among precipitation across the western United States, the northern Pacific jet stream (NPJ) across the northern Pacific Ocean basin, and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon
to determine if the NPJ significantly adds to the existing ENSO-based understanding of inter-annual variability in precipitation. The results indicate that the NPJ is significantly related to winter precipitation across a much larger area of the western United
States than the ENSO signal. For areas where the ENSO signal is significantly related to precipitation, there generally exists a stronger or more consistent NPJ-precipitation relationship. The results indicate that there is value in considering seasonal
jet stream characteristics as independent variables, along with climate teleconnections, when considering seasonal precipitation variability in regions where large-scale jet stream dynamics are influential.

By using the observed monthly mean temperature and humidity datasets of 14 radiosonde stations and monthly mean precipitation data of 83 surface stations from 1979 to 2008 over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), the relationship between the atmospheric water
vapor (WV) and precipitation in summer and the precipitation conversion efficiency (PEC) over the TP are analyzed. The spatial distributions of atmospheric water vapor (WV) content over the TP in summer (June-July-August) are analyzed. Possible
connections between water vapor and precipitation are examined. Finally, the PEC over the TP is calculated and analyzed.

The aim of this study was to analyze the variation trends of the runoff and quantitatively assess the contributions of precipitation and human activities to the runoff change in the Huangfuchuan River Basin based on the measured data in 1960–2008
. Two inflection points (turning years) of 1979 and 1998 for the accumulative runoff change, and one inflection point of 1979 for the accumulative precipitation change were identified using the methods of accumulative anomaly analysis. A new method
of slope change ratio of accumulative quantity (SCRAQ) was put forward and used in this study to calculate the contributions of different factors to the runoff change. Taking 1960–1979 as the base period, the contribution rate of the precipitation and human
