- (JPB)
To isolate the effects of precipitation and boundary condition, the AA. measured rates of soil production from bedrock and described soils on hillslopes along a semi-arid to hyperarid precipitation gradient in northern Chile. In each climate zone
, hillslopes with contrasting boundary conditions (actively incising channels versus noneroding landforms) were studied. Channel incision rates, which ultimately drive hillslope erosion, varied with precipitation rather than tectonic setting throughout
the study area. The biotic-abiotic threshold also marks the precipitation rate below which bedrock erosion rates are no longer a function of soil thickness. This work shows that hillslope processes become sensitive to precipitation as life disappears

Multivariate regression models that integrate topographic and geographic information are developed to predict monthly precipitation in the Daqing Mountains of northern China. Five geographic and topographic factors, including longitude, latitude
, elevation, slope, and aspect, are taken into account in the model development. The data are acquired from a 100 m resolution DEM of the national topographic databases. Measured precipitation data at 56 stations between 1955 and 1990 are used for model
development, and a leave-one-out cross-validation method is used for model evaluation. The model explains most of the spatial variability in monthly precipitation, and can also quantify the relative importance of different geographic and topographic variables.

The AA. analyzed the influence of the PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation) on winter precipitation during years of high- and low-index ENSO conditions for 260 climate divisions in the eastern U.S. from 1925 to 1998. When the 33 neutral ENSO years
are split by cold (12 years) and warm (21 years) PDO, the resulting winter precipitation patterns show wetter (drier) than average conditions in nearly all (80%) of the 260 climate divisions during the warm (cold) phase of the PDO. The two ENSO/PDO

Temperature and precipitation time series datasets from 1961 to 2005 at 65 meteorological stations were used to reveal the spatial and temporal trends of climate change in Xinjiang, China. Annual and seasonal mean air temperature and total
precipitation were analyzed using Mann-Kendall (MK) test, inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation, and R/S methods. The results indicate that both temperature and precipitation increased in the past 45 years, but the increase in temperature is more obvious
than that of precipitation. This increase is different inside Xinjiang, in winter or in summer. Hurst index (H) analysis indicates that climate change will continue the current trends.
The AA. present a spatial estimation of the contribution of occult precipitation to the true atmospheric sulphur deposition across the territory of the Czech Republic. Their estimation is based on differences in 2 spatially explicit, data driven geo
forested areas at 1x1 km resolution are presented and the dependence of the contribution of occult precipitation to sulphur deposition on altitude is assessed.

Observed historical (1895-2008) and projected future (to 2099) seasonal temperature and precipitation trends were examined along the Appalachian Trail (AT), a 3500 km continuous hiking trail in the eastern United States. The AT has generally warmed
since 1895, with greater warming occurring more recently. The warming has been greatest in the northern part of the AT and during winter. Precipitation trends show wide spatial variation depending upon the season, but generally precipitation has
increased more in the northern than southern AT. Temperature and precipitation are projected to increase for all regions during all seasons in the future. Implications of these changes are discussed with respect to hiker experience and trail management.

advection, evapotranspiration and entrainment from the free atmosphere other than precipitation, influenced the surface δv on various time-scales including event-based precipitation, seasonal and diurnal scales. Especially, the effect of vegetation, namely
