Discriminant analysis is used to classify synoptic weather regimes at two contrasting locations in southern African for the purpose of wind power assessment. Due to their differing characteristics and different frequencies of occurrence
, the synoptic categories make vastly different contributions to total wind power. (AJC).
Other domains of democratic theory : space, power, and the politics of democratization
Bolivia ; Democracy ; Geopolitics ; Latin America ; Peru ; Policy ; Power ; Social relations ; Territoriality ; Theory
These questions are pursued in the context of the coloniality of power and of an exploration of the territoriality of democratization in the Peruvian and Bolivian cases. The overall objective is to go beyond the limits of a Euro-Americanist frame
An analysis of causes of power shortage in Nigeria
In a technically-based article there is useful information on Nigeria's power projects which suggests that even Kainji brings only temporary relief. (EMS).
Economic benefits of cooperative power supply expansion
Analyse théorique sur la réduction des coûts de production de l'énergie par l'intégration de deux entreprises, par ex. Saskatchewan Power et Manitoba Hydro. Modèles de croissance fusionnée. (Vnm).
Geopolitical imaginations across the North-South divide : issues of difference, development and power
Development ; Geopolitics ; International relations ; Modernization ; North-South relations ; Political geography ; Political regime ; Power
In the context of development and the will to be modern, the paper explores key elements of power and representation across the North-South divide. Taking examples from US- Latin American relations, it emphasizes the continuity of geopolitical power
Thresholds and the spatial variability of flood power during extreme floods
This paper analyzes the variation in flood power both at-a-station and downstream in a basin of differing lithologies, and discusses the geologic and geomorphic controls on flood power. Floodplain width influences these local and general controls
, and will directly and indirectly control flood power within the drainage network through its control on the rates of change of several hydraulic variables during discharge increases.
Exploring the emergence of the subject in power : infant geographies
Agency ; Applied geography ; Infant ; Nonrepresentational theory ; Power ; Societal relations ; Subjectivity processes ; Theory
This paper explores the emergence of the subject in power through infant geographies. It focuses upon how subjection occurs in specific material spaces, and the role of a host of human and nonhuman others to the process of subjection. It also
analyses how diversities of kinship and nonkinship social relations might lead to other constellations of power in the subjection of infants. How the geographies of infants can be operationalised methodologically and epistemologically is also studied.
Cold War ; Conflict ; Geopolitics ; Global network ; Militarization ; Polarization ; Policy ; Power ; Spatial distribution ; World
The article deals with the phenomenon of military power as an important dimension of states’ power capabilities. It explores the long-standing influence of anarchy, which forces states to think in terms of power. The article also examines shifts
in military power distribution, after the end of the Cold War, and the general tendency towards the reduction of U.S. unipolarity. - (EN)
Estimating critical stream power for bedload transport calculations in gravel-bed rivers
The physical basis of Bagnold's equation for critical stream power is examined. More general equations are presented which overcome the limitations of this equation. They require a knowledge of channel slope, but not depth. The analysis suggests
that the presence of form resistance in addition to grain roughness does not affect the calculation of critical power. Critical power is expected to depend more sensitively on grain size between reaches than within reaches.
Bringing power back in : collective and distributive forms of power in public participation
This article analyses collective and distributive forms of power in public participation through the example of a urban development project in Basel, Switzerland. It demonstrates that resourceful and organisationally privileged actors have
influenced the impact of citizen’s demands on public decision making in significant ways. It shows the production and implementation of collective power deriving from citizens depends on distributive power sources residing in governments and bureaucracies
Seeing power in international development cooperation : environmental policy integration and the World Bank
Bangladesh ; Cooperation ; Development ; Economic development ; Empowerment ; Governance ; Governmentality ; Political geography ; Power
This article analyses power in international development cooperation through environmental policy integration and the World Bank in Dhaka, Banglasdesh. It proposes an alternative account that reveals a will to power among the international
development community, realised through the construction of knowledge. This approach suggests that that the primary motivation for the will to power is relational power at the international scale. It is concluded that the narrative generated through our hybrid
