La configuration géomorphologique du site de Cixi (rive sud de la baie de Hangzhou), constituée de terrains vallonnés au sud, de la mer au nord, et de la plaine littorale dans la zone centrale, a été créée vers 2 500 ans BP. La zone intertidale de
Cixi appartient à la classe ensablement d'une batture. Les facteurs intervenant dans la formation et l'évolution de la zone intertidale de Cixi comprennent principalement la faiblesse du relief, les débits fluviaux et les activités humaines. Le principe
de régulation du chenal de marée dans le processus de restauration de la zone intertidale devrait guider le mode d'intervention au même titre que la restauration de la zone intertidale s’accompagne de la régulation du chenal de marée.
