region concerned is the province of Northern Karelia. A region-level core-periphery system is outlined in which the organization of the economy, the division of labour, performance potential and environmental relations are examined by regional and spatial
analysis and resource analysis. A model is developed for evaluating the performance potential of an economy and proposing alternative paths of development.
. A scenario experiment was performed in a small peripheral area of Finland, Northern Karelia, in the early 1980s, and preliminary results are given regarding its ability to evaluate the course of restructuring in manufacturing in this area.
