Flexibility in place and meanings of place by first generation migrants
Cultural identity ; England ; Immigrants ; Neighbourhood ; Participation ; Perception ; Place ; Sense of belonging ; Sheffield ; Transnationalism ; United Kingdom ; Urban landscape
The experience and perception of local places of first generation migrants is investigated. Two themes are addressed : the scope of the outdoor environment to support a sense of belonging to new places, and how choices and values may reflect
places. Emotional qualities of place attachment can be strengthened by the recognition of transnational links.

This paper explores the potential for using place names for the identification of historical landscape features characteristic of the agras field system in Northwest Spain. We first evaluated statistically the significance of a set of targeted place
names as predictors of agras presence. We then analysed the spatio-temporal distribution of agras using place names from historical records and rural cadastre cartography. Results indicated that there was a significant correspondence between selected
the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Our findings suggest that identification of historical landscape features by means of place names could be of interest for further landscape research, with application in landscape inventory, monitoring and landscape

Far from the ‘Magic of the Mall’: Retail (Change) in ‘Other Places’
A pre-occupation with the ‘new’ and a focus on corporate retailers and spaces has led to a lack of consideration of change and issues in secondary or ‘other places’ of retail. Using a longitudinal survey methodology, data on retail stock, churn
, vacancy and use are considered for one such ‘other place’ – Shettleston in Glasgow. The data show complex dimensions and aspects of vulnerability and resilience, compounded by reactions to exogenous retail and other economic and social changes. Far from
being ‘seedy, pre-historical backwaters’, Shettleston and similar ‘other’ places can be vital, local centres playing a variety of useful roles. They require support and attention every bit as much as more high profile town centres and high streets.
