- Le bassin central du Tennessee est une dépression formée dans un dôme structural, par érosion différentielle dans la formation de Fort Payne (Mississipien) riche en silicates et des calcaires ordoviciens sous-jacents. L'importance de l'érosion
- chimique par million d'années est d'environ 11 m pour la formation de Fort Payne et 40 m pour les calcaires ordoviciens. Le début du développement de la cuvette par dissolution remonte à moins de 10 millions d'années. En tenant compte des processus
- mécaniques (érosion fluviatile, mouvements de masse) qui se sont exercés sur la formation de Fort Payne, la dissolution des calcaires remonterait à seulement 6 millions d'années.
