Nivation is generally associated with the weathering and mass movement processes stemming from late-lying seasonal snow and the ensuing landforms. As a process suite it invokes mechanisms such as freeze-thaw weathering and solifluction
. Cryoplanation also invokes a process suite, but one that also embraces nivation. Research in the last 2 or 3 decades has begun to provide a much sharper definition of nivation, but the available information is still inadequate for a central mechanism
in periglacial landscapes. A case is presented for viewing nivation and cryoplanation as a single process spectrum much in need of state-of-the-art research.

Most of the main nivation hollows and valleys are older than the last phase of the Weichselian glaciation as indicated by the fact that they contain till or morainic boulders from the north eastern ice, the main ice stream in Skåne during the last
glaciation. Hydro-thermal water has made hollows and rill water small valleys in the cliff where the nivation processes begun. The nivation processes were caused by drifting snow from the east during the Weichselian.
Nivation evidence from a north-facing slope? Golden Gate, Eastern Orange Free State

Nivation features have been identified on south-facing slopes above 1 800 m in Lesotho and the eastern Free State. A pair of nivation landforms are identified on north-facing slopes at 2 100-2 300 m. - (AJC)
This paper describes the results of detailed surveys for the landscape systems (landforms, vegetation, topsoils and snow cover duration) of a nivation hollow in northern Japan and discusses their evolution in the Holocene epoch. The nivation hollow

More than 10,000 nivation landforms occur in the higher mountain ranges of the western Great Basin. Nearly all of these nivation hollows are relict. Distribution of nivation hollows suggests that (1) the full glacial nivation threshold altitude (NTA
The aims as well as the area and methodes used in nivation studies in Tatra Mts. are presented. Deterioration of snow cover with 5 different phases distribution of snow patches have been charcterized. Characteristics of processes interacting
in surroundings of snow patches is given. Nivation role in modelling of High Tatra is rather slender, while catastrophic processes can significantly model the relief. - (DG)

The Mont Dore massif is a typical high-mountain area with nival relief dominant above the timberline. Nivation, cryogenic processes and deflation are the key morphogenic processes, but runoff action, especially on slopes with deteriored vegetation
This paper discusses nivation and its effects, based on quantitative studies. These are related to local environmental conditions including slope type, aspect and weathering cover. It illustrates the role of snow patches in the High Tatras.
