Clustering of emigrants in urban areas occurred even in cities without ethnic differences. Between 1881 and 1911 migrants to London from elsewhere in England and Wales tended to cluster by county of origin. The extent of that clustering decreased
over time, because of cultural convergence that resulted from increased literacy, industrialization, and improved communication. Migrants from rural areas were more clustered than those from other urban centers.
