This paper reports the discovery of an exceptionally thick ash deposit of MiddlePleistocene age in western Epirus, Greece. This ash layer has not been reworked and has a chemical composition that links it to an Italian volcanic source 750 km
distant. The deposit must have been produced by one of the largest Mediterranean eruptions of the past 400,000 yr and should form a distinctive marker horizon in Pleistocene deposits of southern Italy, mainland Greece, and the Aegean Sea.

opportunity to study large assemblages of in situ Acheulian artifacts, a rare phenomenon in the middlePleistocene Levantine record. In addition, the organic materials will facilitate paleoenvironmental reconstructions from an ecological floral perspective.
Lower Pleistocene deposits fluvial middlePleistocene deposits and fluvial mass flow and alluvial fan Saalian deposits are involved. The most complete thrust sheets are up to 25 m thick.
The objectives of this study were to describe the character and extent of the Pleistocene deposits, to establish the number and periods of glaciation, to reevaluate the existing Pleistocene stratigraphy, and to compare the glacial events with those
known in other Southern Hemisphere middle latitude areas.
Tephrostratigraphy of the Bedded Tuff Member (Kapthurin Formation, Kenya) and the nature of archaeological change in the later middlePleistocene

The AA. emphasize here data from the Kapthurin Formation of Kenya and detail a stratigraphic framework for a succession of volcanic tephra and archaeological sites that provides the means to assess temporal change across the Acheulian Middle Stone
Fossiliferous middlePleistocene sediments of the Tarija basin of southern Bolivia contain a classic Ensenandan land-mammal fauna. New carbon isotopic data reported here for 5 specimens of the grazing mammals Equus (horse) and Cuvieronius (mastodon
), documented from 8 stratigraphic levels at Tarija, vary significantly in the C 13 values of their teeth. These new isotopic data are used here to identify warm-cold paleoclimatic cycles during the middlePleistocene and clarify the upper limit
The Adriatic coastal area stretching from Monopoli to Brindisi in Apulia is characterised by landforms and marine/coastal deposits of Middle-Upper Pleistocene age. An E-W striking fault system, roughly corresponding to the geographic “Soglia
Messapica”, is also present. This area shows the effects of different phases of coastal evolution. During the MiddlePleistocene, north of the Soglia Messapica, thin coastal deposits accumulated and abrasion surfaces were cut whereas, to the south, marine
Karstic landscape evolution of southern Apulia foreland during the Pleistocene
by MiddlePleistocene terrigenous sediments has been recognized. Presently, the Salento Peninsula landscape shows at its inner and western parts wide karstic surfaces, remnants of the middlePleistocene sedimentary cover, and morphostructural ridges. - (NF)
The Salento area is a narrow peninsula composed of Cretaceous and Neogenic carbonatic rocks constituting the southernmost part of the emerged Apulian foreland. A karstic landscape shaped on Upper Cretaceous - Lower Pleistocene rocks and covered

on the timing of extensive Pleistocene glaciations that affected this area. This approach relies on the tephrochronological method, augmented by glass-fission-track, K-Ar, and TL (thermoluminescence) ages, which are supported at some localities by paleomagnetic

Some MiddlePleistocene deposits and palynological diagrams were discovered in South-West of France. The floras of these phases are poorly known in Europa, especially for the beginning of the MiddlePleistocene. In South-West of France, some
Palaeoenvironments and sedimentology of the MiddlePleistocene Olorgesailie Formation, southern Kenya Rift Valley in Palaeoecology of Africa and the surrounding islands-Vol 13.
A detailed account is presented of the sediments and diatoms of the MiddlePleistocene Olorgesailie Formation. Facies distributions suggest a lake that was centred on the Koora Graben and which periodically expanded over an area to the north of Mt
phases in the evolution of the palaeolake can be inferred. The palaeogeography of the southern Kenya Rift and MiddlePleistocene palaeoclimate are briefly considered.
Schwermineralverteilung und Alter pleistozäner mariner Sedimente in Mittelitalien. (Heavy mineral distribution and age of Pleistocene marine sediments in middle Italy)
In the Maremma, Alto Lazio, Middle Italy, heavy mineral studies were used to differentiate several types of beachrock and other marine sediments which are attributed to marine terraces of different age. (L'A.).
Study of seventy well-preserved fossil remains from deposits of an eroded karstic cave in the Upper Galilee of northern Israel. This assemblage probably dates to the Early Toringian (MQ2, MiddlePleistocene). The AA. correlate the carnivore faunule
with some Near Eastern and southern Levantine sites and assume that only a severe cold phase could have shifted these species over the Taurus-Zagros mountain chain this far to the south. This faunule elucidates Pleistocene biotic exchanges between Europe
The presence of cave lion and the evolutionary stage of the horse and mammoth remains, dates the fauna back to the middle of the last glacial period. Paleoecological and paleoclimatological information is given. - (LW)

Bir Sahara, situated in the eastern Saharan portion of northeast Africa, contains a set of sedimentary sequences that imply episodic changes in climate and environment during the Middle and Late Pleistocene. Some of the stratigraphic contexts
are associated with Middle Paleolithic artifact assemblages. The artifact assemblages are typically in sands that underlie deposits composed of high amounts of carbonate or fine clastics (muds) indicative of expanding lakes and wetter climates. The wetter
climates may have provided landscapes that were periodically inhabitable by Pleistocene hominids.
