International boundaries and territorial stability in the Middle East : an assessment
The Middle East and the emerging new world order
Asia ; Boundary;Frontier ; Coastal waters ; Conflict ; Geopolitics ; Middle East ; National territory ; Political geography
International boundaries in the Middle East are less likely to represent a major source of international stress than is generally perceived. Current political processes seem to be working in favour of the status quo and territorial stability
. The major maritime boundary disputes are concentrated in the Persian Gulf. Given political will to resolve problems of delimitation, the ultimate demarcation of boundaries should progress without serious conflict between states in the region.
Correlation of Late-Pleistocene lake-level oscillations in Mono Lake, California, with North Atlantic climate events
C 14 dating ; California ; Climatic variation ; Correlation ; Lacustrine sediment ; Lake level ; Marine sediment ; North Atlantic Ocean ; Oxygen 18 ; Palaeogeography ; Pleistocene ; Quaternary ; United States of America
In this study, the AA. have employed paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) data obtained on North Atlantic and Mono Lake sediments as well as O 18 and total inorganic carbon (TIC) measurements of Mono Lake sediments to show that lowstands of Mono
Lake occurred during Heinrich events H1, H2, and H4. These results enforce the concept that relatively dry-wet oscillations in the climate of the Great Basin of the western United States occurred at approximately the same times as cold-warm oscillations
The spatial, temporal, and thermodynamic characteristics of Southern-Atlantic United States tornado events
Atlantic Ocean ; Cluster analysis ; Coastal environment ; Forecast ; Index ; Rainstorm ; Southern United States ; Tornado ; United States of America ; Weather forecast ; Weather type ; Years 1980-89
Severe weather forecasting index values are derived for 129 Southern Atlantic (SA) Coast (South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia) and 98 southern Great Plains (Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas) tornado days through spatial and temporal
Middle Holocene dry period in the northern midwestern United States: lake levels and pollen stratigraphy
Etats-Unis ; Géographie de l'Amérique ; Holocène moyen ; Middle West ; Niveau lacustre ; Palynologie ; Paléoclimatologie ; Paléolinologie ; Quaternaire zones moyennes ; Stratigraphie ; Wisconsin
Four cores from Lake Mendota in the Yahara River valley of south-central Wisconsin provide pollen, charcoal, and sediment-stratigraphic evidence of a middle Holocene (about 6500-3500 yr B.P.) dry period in the northern Midwest.
Theoretical correlations and lateral discontinuities in the Quaternary aminostratigraphic record of the U.S. Atlantic Coastal Plain
Aminostratigraphy ; Coastal environment ; Palaeogeography ; Quaternary ; Sea level ; Stratigraphic correlation ; Stratigraphy ; United States
Presents a quantitative analysis of the controversy regarding amino acid isochrons for the Atlantic Coastal Plain of the United States. Offers geologic insights that may explain these conflicts, which are directly related to underlying assumptions
Sequence stratigraphy, depositional history, and middle to late Quaternary sea levels of the Ventura shelf, California
California ; Marine quaternary ; Sea level ; Seismic method ; Stratigraphy ; Tectonics ; United States
Through analysis of high resolution seismic-reflection profiles, this paper addresses the middle to late Quaternary history of sedimentation of the Ventura shelf and associated glacioeustatic sea level fluctuations, and it constructs a chronology
Beitrag zur Einschätzung des Zustandes der Erdkruste der Mittel-europäischen Senke. (A contribution to the assessment of the state of earth's crust of the Middle-European depression)
Based on investigations on the interruption of the isostatic equilibrium of the earth crust and the horizontal gradients of thicknesses and depths within the Middle-European depression different crustal states could be found out for the GDR part
Middle-income housing programmes in American cities
Housing ; Housing improvement ; Housing market ; Housing policy ; Middle class ; Town ; United States of America ; Urban construction
Seven North American cities (Baltimore, Cleveland, Montreal, New York, St Louis, St Paul and Wilmington) are studied. Middle-income housing programmes have developed a strong constituency among community leaders and minority politicians who see

Holocene aridity and storm phases, Gulf and Atlantic coasts, USA
Climatic variation ; Coastal plain ; Drought ; Holocene ; Hurricane ; North Carolina ; Palynology ; Quaternary ; Rainstorm ; United States of America
Arid episodes coeval with the Little River local wet interval are known from eolian sediments and pollen spectra in the Atlantic and the Gulf coastal plain. For multiple reasons, the regional extent, intensity, and duration of coastal aridity
The paper presents poverty and marginalization of population in the area of former state farmlands illustrated with examples from The Middle Pomerania region. The issue of vital importance to the rural community of The Middle Pomerania region
is the problem of former state farmland population, commonly regarded as poor and apathetic. - (BJ)
This metropolitain, mid-atlantic coast state is described with an emphasis on industrial, urban, and other cultural features. Physical setting and attributes and the state's place in the region are also characterized. (DOH).
Atlant and Slovene national consciousness in the second half of the 19th century
ATLANT ; Atlas ; Conscience nationale ; Géographie historique ; Histoire de la cartographie ; Identité nationale ; Siècle 19 ; Slovénie
of this kind of geographic publication is Atlant, the first atlas of the world in the Slovene language, which was published in installments from 1869 to 1877. Atlant followed the concept of a Unified Slovenia, and this idea boosted the confidence of Slovenes
, the bulk of whom were incorpored into Austria-Hungary as they entered the stage of European politics as a nation for the first time. With the publication of Atlant, a number of geographical names were translated into Slovene or Slovenized for the first time
. The geographic, linguistic and political conditions in which Slovenes lives, as well as the relations at the time between Slovene, German, and Slavic languages, are reflected in the way foreign place names were adapted. The reprinting of Atlant in 2005 is also
associated with a critical period in history, since it was published after the independance of Slovenia and its inclusion in the European Union, a time when the young state has been seeking its identity among all the world's nations. - (IKR)

Delaware ; Maryland ; New Jersey ; Palaeo-environment ; Permafrost ; Pleistocene ; Quaternary ; Thermokarst ; United States of America
This paper summarises field observations between 2002 and 2007 that suggest past permafrost and past conditions of deep seasonal frost existed on the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain during the cold periods of the Late Pleistocene. A widespread pre
