On a récemment vu paraître des études suggérant qu'il y a eu rupture entre les théories modernes et post-modernes sur la ville et autres domaines de la vie sociale. L'A. analyse ici plusieurs critiques de ces théories. Après avoir analysé les
similitudes et différences entre la ville moderne (et sa théorie) et la ville post-moderne (et sa théorie), il reconnaît qu'il y a beaucoup de continuités et de discontinuités entre elles.

Les approches non-modernes cherchent à savoir comment des entités de toutes sortes sont constituées. Elles radicalisent ainsi la pensée moderne. Par contre, en considérant la dichotomie entre Nature et Culture, base de la modernité, comme une
construction contextuelle, elles tranchent nettement avec la pensée moderne. Lorsque la distinction entre Nature et Culture devient floue, elle ne peut plus servir d'orientation de base pour organiser les programmes universitaires. La géographie pourrait ainsi
à l'avenir se distinguer comme discipline non-moderne capable d'étudier tous ces phénomènes hybrides entre Nature et Culture, qui posent problème aux modernes.
This paper studies the endogenous choice of transport technology, traditional versus modern, by a shipper. Although the modern technology is characterized by higher fixed costs and a higher speed of transport, it is chosen for intermediate distances
, rather than to long distances. The reason is that, when the shipper switches to the modern technology, the industrial firm changes production from the home to the foreign city. Thus, the demand for transport decreases proportionally to the distance
between the home and foreign city. For long distances, revenue from transportation becomes so low that the modern technology does not break even.
The article examines the implicit boundary narratives of both modernization theory and of its counter-discourses and successors. Among the successors, special attention is given to the paradigm of reflexive modernization and its empirical corollary
