The aim of this study is to analyze the changes that take place in the demographic processes in rural areas of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodship between 1988 and 2009. Evaluation of these changes was based on the demographic potential of rural
communes in 1988 and 2009. The situation is characterized by a demographic collapse, which is a direct result of their peripheral location. This problem affects especially the borderland municipalities located in the northern part of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie
tends to aggravate the distance to the detriment of rural communes’ socio-economic development in the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodship, which in turn may reinforce their peripheral character. – (BJ)
