The global spread of the supermarket and the planned shopping centre is transforming retail space in the LatinAmerican city. Market-place trading has continued to flourish in most cities. A case study of Quito shows how new periodic markets have
been established and that these are consolidated into daily markets. Much of the dynamism in market-place trading is associated with government intervention, with principal policies being the creation of markets in poorly served urban areas
and a reduction in the concentration of trading in the historic centre.

This article examines mestizage and public opinion in Latin America (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru). Across countries, it finds partial evidence that the strength of earlier nation-making
mestizaje ideas is related to support for mestizaje today, and that strong multicultural policies may have actually strengthened such support. It discovers that the national principle of mestizaje is associated with more tolerant attitudes about

The paper examines global regionalization tendencies by tracing trade interactions from 1965 to 1990 and finds a trend toward a less spatially fragmented world economy. Five dominant trade regions may be identified in 1990 as compared to eight
smaller regions in 1965. The regions have become more geographically oriented, with the majority of members associated with the regional cores of Japan, Germany, and the United States. The A. shows that regions have also increased their inclination
to trade a larger share of their GDP with the rest of the world.

The spread of enclosed residential areas is a phenomenon observed throughout Latin-America. In Lima subsequently and informally enclosed neighbourhoods are by far the most dominant type. Instead of the real-estate sector offering a product
, the residents themselves, mostly organised through some form of local association, initiate the fortification process. Street gates are the most prominent physical feature of spatial intervention. The process of enclosing is characterised by its almost complete
informality. Very few of the installed street barriers are authorised by the responsible authorities, although they constrain the access to public spaces and the right of free movement. Since the end of the 1990s, when the first enclosed residential areas
