Changes in the bathymetry and volume of glacial Lake Agassiz between 9200 and 7700 C 14 yr B.P.
Bathymetry ; Holocene ; Lake ; Lake level ; Model ; North America ; Palaeogeography ; Palaeohydrology ; Proglacial lake
Computer reconstructions of the bathymetry of the lake were used to quantify variations in the size and form of Lake Agassiz during its final 2 phases (the Nipigon and Ojibway phases). The estimates of Lake Agassiz volumes and releases presented
here provide a quantitative basis for evaluating the impact that Lake Agassiz may have had on North America and on the oceans into which it flowed.
Measurement, correlation, and mapping of glacial Lake Algonquin shorelines in northern Michigan
Cartography ; Correlation ; Global Positioning System ; Isostasy ; Lake ; Lake level ; Michigan ; Proglacial lake ; Quaternary ; Shoreline ; United States of America
The aim of this article is to produce accurate lake-level curves for Main Lake Algonquin and several post-Main lakes, evaluate/correlate the post-Main lakes in light of new data on shoreline elevations, and accurately map the areas inundated
by the various lake levels. The AA. use differential global positioning system (DGPS) technology to measure elevations of unquestionable Algonquin shorelines at wave-cut bluffs. They then correlate their shoreline data to previous estimates of post-Main Algonquin
features in an attempt to clarify the sequence of post-Algonquin lakes.

Cold area ; Field experiment ; Glacier ; Greenland ; Lake ; Research technique
In South East Greenland, the north-western part of the Mittivakkat Glacier calves into a lake, called Icefall Lake, situated at its terminus. The aim of this study is to test the applicability of the logger in this environment, and to develop
Environmental and climatic changes during the last 20,000 years at Lake Tuz, central Turkey
Alluvial cone ; Anatolia ; Archeological site ; Biostratigraphy ; Climatic variation ; Lake ; Lake level ; Palaeo-environment ; Palaeolimnology ; Quaternary ; Semi-arid area ; Turkey
The detailed lithostratigraphic, biostratigraphic, chemical and physical analyses of lake sediments and alluvial fan sediments done in the Aksaray area, southeast of the basin of Lake Tuz are reported to reconstruct the changes of sedimentary
environments during the Late Quaternary. The A. focuses on the geographic contrast between Konya Basin, where the lake had disappeared at about 10,000 years ago, and Lake Tuz, where a large water area has been kept till now, by comparing environmental histories
of both areas. Data of sedimentary ages and environment of Late Quaternary deposits made clear the lake-level fluctuations and fan developing systems.
Holocene lake-effect precipitation in northern Michigan
C 14 dating ; Carbon ; Holocene ; Isotope analysis ; Lacustrine sediment ; Lake ; Lake level ; Meltwater ; Michigan ; Oxygen 18 ; Palaeo-ecology ; Palaeo-environment ; Pollen diagram ; Precipitation ; United States of America
Holocene sediments from Nelson Lake, on Michigan's eastern Upper Peninsula, provide isotopic, pollen, and charcoal evidence for a two-step sequence of changes in moisture source and increased lake-effect precipitation during the late Holocene
Lacustrine shore platforms at Lake Waikaremoana, North Island, New Zealand
Comparative study ; Erosion rate ; Lacustrine sediment ; Lake ; Lake level ; Model ; New Zealand ; North Island ; Ocean ; Shore platform ; Weathering
This paper has 3 objectives. First, to describe the shore platforms at Lake Waikaremoana. Second, to determine whether principles governing oceanic platforms can be applied to a lacustrine setting, and third to present a conceptual model
for the development of the shore platforms at Lake Waikaremoana.
Long-term changes in lake and river systems in Finland
Drainage network ; Eutrophication ; Finland ; Industrial pollution ; Lake ; Pollution ; Postglacial ; Stream ; Water quality
Brief description of the post-glacial history of the watercourses in Finland and a discussion of the effects of human influence on this history and on the condition of the lakes and rivers. Separate mention is made of certain large lakes that have
Holocene soil development on till and outwash inferred from lake-sediment geochemistry in Michigan and Wisconsin
Two geochemical techniques from soil mineralogy were used with lake sediment to reconstruct soil development in the catchments of 2 small lakes, one on outwash and the other on till, in the Great Lakes region. The results help to describe
accumulation of soil weathering products in each lake, to infer the timing of stages of soil development and the flux of material between catchment and lake, and to relate the timing of soil development to catchment geology and to paleoclimate.
The oriented lakes of Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula, Western Arctic coast, Canada : a GIS-based analysis
Arctic Region ; Canada ; Geographical information system ; Geomorphometry ; Lake ; Northwest Territories ; Periglacial features ; Permafrost ; Statistics ; Tundra ; Wind
The orientation, size and shape of 578 lakes on Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula were obtained from 1 : 250 000 Canadian National Topographic Survey map sheets, using Arc View geographic information system. The coincidence of the modelled orientation and lake
statistics supports the efficacy of cross wind-induced effects in orienting the lakes. The similar orientation of existing lakes and former basins suggests that these processes have been effective for at least several centuries.
High-resolution seismic and ground penetrating radar - Geophysical profiling of a thermokarst lake in the western Lena Delta, northern Siberia
Asian part of Russia ; Delta ; Geophysics ; Lacustrine sediment ; Lake ; Periglacial features ; Permafrost ; Radar ; Seismic method ; Siberia ; Thermokarst
High-resolution seismic and ground-penetrating-radar (GPR) data have been acquired over Lake Nikolay in the western Lena Delta in order to study the uppermost basin fill and the bordering frozen margins. GPR measurements were completed on the frozen
lake and its permafrost margins, while high-resolution seismic data were acquired from the lake during open-water conditions in summer using a Chirp profiler. The combined use of the 2 profiling systems allows stratigraphic profiling in both frozen
and unfrozen parts of the lake. Short sediment cores were used to aid geophysical data interpretation.
The origin of enigmatic, tubular, lake-shore karren : a mechanism for rapid dissolution of limestone in carbonate-saturated waters
Carbonate dissolution ; Corrosion ; Geochemistry ; Geomorphometry ; Ireland ; Karst ; Lake ; Lake shore ; Limestone
Vertical, upward tapering, closed tubes (here termed röhrenkarren) have been observed in abundance in limestone exposed in the epiphreatic zone around 3 interconnected lakes, loughs Carra, Mask, and Corrib, in counties Galway and Mayo in western
Ireland. Röhrenkarren from by condensation corrosion within air pockets trapped by seasonal floodwaters. Lake-specific differences in röhrenkarren morphometry provide a unique record of the long-term water chemistry at each site. The underlying mechanism
