This paper aims to present and to discuss the results of investigations concerning sediment transportation and deposition by lahars including sediment concentration which varies widely over time and space on Merapi's slopes. The results indicate
that the sediment load fluctuates during lahar flow, further demonstrating that lahars are transient sediment-water flows with unsteady flow properties.

The volcano resumed its eruptive activity in 1994 with emissions of pyroclasts that partially melted the glacier located on the north face. The sudden release of water generated large lahars that flowed downslope though proglacial gorges. This paper
examines the geomorphologic evolution of these gorges since 1992 and focuses particularly on the landforms created by the most recent lahars of July 1997. The research suggests that the transport capacity of the lahars has increased despite the fact
that the sediments they carry originate in deposits formed by earlier processes. The presence of continuous permafrost in the area is a key factor in the formation of lahars.
A catastrophic lahar began on 30 October 1998, as hurricane precipitation triggered a small flank collapse of Casita volcano, a complex and probably dormant stratovolcano. This emphasizes the need, in volcano hazard assessments, for including
the potential for non-eruption-related collapse lahars with the more predictable potential of their syneruption analogues. The flow behaviour emphasizes that volcano collpses can yield not only volcanic debris avalanches with restricted runouts, but also mobile
lahars that enlarge by bulking as they flow. Volumes and hence inundation areas of collapse-runout lahars can increase greatly beyond their sources.
This work investigates the initial colonization on recent lahar deposits of the northeast slope of Popocatepetl volcano, where 29 circular sample plots were established to determine the development stages of colonization in 4 types of habitats
: 1997 lahar, 2001 lahar, margins, and terraces at the channel's bottom. Cluster analysis and the Sorensen index were used to determine the floristic affinity of these lahars. The Principal Component Analysis used to identify other explanatory factors
Correlation of storm rainfall intensities and durations with lahar activity as recorded by acoustic flow monitors is used to investigate trends in the initiation conditions for lahar activity. The results confirm that these relationships
are not linear but rather approximate a power relation. Different relations were found for lahar initiation in different years, from 1991 to 1997, as a result of the dynamic changes in hydrologic and geomorphic conditions of the affected catchments. Data from

In situ samples were taken from lahars in motion at 2 sites in the Curah Lengkong River, on the southeast flank of Semeru, providing estimates of the particle concentration, grain size spectrum, grain density and composition. This enables
to identify flow sediment from 3 categories of lahars: (a) hyperconcentrated flow, (b) non-cohesive, clast- and matrix-supported debris flow, and (c) muddy flood. Rheometrical tests on materials sampled from moving hyperconcentrated flows were carried out
shear rates. These data provide important constraints for future physical and numerical modelling of lahar flows.
This study addresses the production of a lahar risk map using the 2 approaches : Flow Simulation Software (FSS) and Geochronological Method (GM) for a study area located at Popocatépetl volcano – Central Mexico. Santiago Xalitzintla, a town located
on the northern flank of Popocatépetl volcano, where volcanic activity in recent centuries has triggered numerous lahars that have endangered local inhabitants, has been used for the case study. Results from FSS did not provide satisfactory findings because
they were not consistent with lahar sediment observations made during fieldwork. By contrast, the GM produced results consistent with these observations, and therefore we use them to assess the hazard and produce the risk map for the study area.
Analysis of the institutional and social responses to the eruption and the lahars of Mount Pinatubo volcano from 1991 to 1998 (Central Luzon, Philippines)
, it appears that the management of the June 1991 main crisis (eruption) was a success, but difficulties have occurred with lahars risk management. In spite of persistent problems, the management system (monitoring/warning/evacuation) of lahar crises improves

Cartography of population vulnerability to volcanic hazards and lahars of Mount Pinatubo (Philippines) : a case study in Pasig-Potrero River basin (province of Pampanga)
