Preliminary observations on a patterned fen in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Colorado, USA
A patterned fen has developed on a 3.77 degree slope at 3,840 m in the Colorado alpine. The size, 4.45 ha, uniform granodiorite bedrock, and an undisturbed state provide an excellent site for investigating the process of formation. The pool
and ridge pattern, aligned perpendicular to the slope, supports Henoch's (1960) hypothesis that solifluction is active. Evidence for differential frost heave and thrusting was observed in the fen and on the slopes adjacent to it. Fluvial processes within
the fen support conclusions reached by Thom (1972) that running water influences development. The freezing plane was encountered in two trenches, suggesting that permafrost may underlie the fen and contribute to development. A polytenetic hypothesis
is necessary to explain the development of a patterned fen.
