Irrigation, a major water use until recently, has been strongly affected by the collapse of the central planning system and by the transition towards market-based system. It has dropped to a point where less than 15% of the areas equipped
for irrigation are actually irrigated. Heavy state investments in the irrigation subsector and its vital importance for the economy make it imperative.

Cropped and irrigated lands in Andhra Pradesh, India : a study on their association
An attempt has been made to assess the association between cropped and irrigatedarea on the basis of product moment correlation coefficient. Andhra Pradesh is primarily an agricultural state where over one third of the net sown area is irrigated

Recently there has been a dramatic increase in the area used for small scale irrigated agriculture. This study presents an analysis of the feasibility of irrigated agriculture whithout a depletion of the natural resources in the area. The analysis
involves an assessment of the quality of the potential irrigation waters and an estimation of the minimum leaching requirements to control salinity, sodicity and permeability hazards. This information and estimated crop water requirements for maize are used

The Tebrak area affords a typical example of the country's agricultural expansion and groundwater management problems. Since irrigated agriculture in the Tebrak area, as well as in most of the country, is mainly dependent on groundwater, the purpose
of this paper is to highlight the problems of groundwater development in this desert area and the need for careful conservation and efficient use of this vital resource.

The aim of this study is to compare the water use efficiency before (2001) and after (2002–2008) implementation of a new irrigation management plan in an area operating with traditional methods. To this end, annual water balances were carried out
in a pilot basin (95 ha) in Northeast Spain during the period between 2001 and 2008. From these, the evolution of irrigation quality (Net Hydric Needs, Irrigation Efficiency, and Water Deficit) was analyzed in climatically different years and after changes
in irrigation management (i. assignment of irrigation allowances, ii. on-demand flood irrigation system, and iii. creation of water consumption accounts). The changes in irrigation management contributed to a better adjustment between water consumption and net
hydric needs of crops, translating into improved irrigation efficiency and drainage reduction.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of tillage method and depth on furrow irrigation hydraulics and soil water storage during the dry season at Dire Dawa, Eastern Ethiopia. Treatments in the study included were chisel, moldboard and disk
ploughing; and Maresha (local plough). Data obtained through field measurement and/or observations and laboratory analysis included soil data, irrigation water, advance and recession times, inflow-outflow volumes, available soil moisture, and infiltration
rate at each irrigation event. Extending tillage depth significantly increased irrigation infiltration, increased irrigation water advance time, increased application efficiency, and increased saturated hydraulic conductivity; and significantly
decreased tail water ratio and distribution uniformity in the first two irrigations, but had little effect during the successive irrigations.

There are very serious water and sediment problems in the irrigatedareas of northwest Shandong Province. The conflicts between the excessive dependence on the Yellow River and the decreasing tendancy of water amount provided by the Yellow River
forces the local government to find new ways to solve the water ressource problems. The answer could be : using new technique for the irrigated system, pay more attention to the ground water development, and the construction and maintenance of wells.
