- Labour control in the tobacco agro-spaces : migrant agricultural workers in South-Western Ontario
- Canada ; Employment ; Farm ; International migration ; Labour migration ; Manpower ; Ontario ; Seasonal work ; Tobacco ; Working conditions
- This article focuses on the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program workers in tobacco farming, and investigate the ways that labour control is achieved on two small-scale farms in South-Western Ontario, Canada. The findings show that various factors
- at multiple scales shape the labour control regime and significantly advantage farm owners over workers. It concludes that the labour control regime is conditioned exogenously by multi-scalar factors and generated endogenously at the point of production.
- Working culture : the agency and employment experiences of nonunionized workers in the surfboard industry
- Australia ; California ; Employment ; Hawaii ; Industry ; Seasonal work ; Standardization ; United States of America
- This paper examines the agency of nonunionized workers employed in the surfboard industry across thirty-five workshops and three hubs of production (O’ahu, Hawai’i, southern California, and east coast Australia) and reveals how cultural values
- and logics powerfully shape labor relations in the surfboard industry. It shows that over the last decade, however, standardization, international competition, and managerial ambitions to upscale for export have instigated pervasive shifts to automated
- , capital-intensive production. It concludes that workers’ agency is now being hampered by the laid-back, subcultural values pertaining to commercial production and workplace relations.

- occupational safety and health law as example. Formalism and federalism appear beset by powerful internal tensions that reflect the confrontation of space by the state.
