In the valley-bottom deposits of the south-western Gongola Basin several morphodynamic phases of the relatively arid Late Holocene can be recognized and to some extend dated. The accumulation of fluvial-colluvial sediments followed an erosional
phase in the valley areas lasting until about 2 000 BP. The formation of the uppermost fossil humic horizon can probably be correlated with moister climatic conditions during the 16th and 17th century. The currently occurring gully-like dissection
of the valley-bottom deposits and the adjacent slopes in above all put down to the substantial anthropogenic intensification of the surface runoff caused by an almost complete clearing of the protective vegetational cover.
