- Glacial geomorphology : towards a convergence of glaciology and geomorphology
- Special Issue : The future of geomorphology
- This review presents a perspective on recent trends in glacial geomorphological research, and in particular the increasing engagement with investigating glaciation over larger and longer timescales facilitated by advances in remote sensing
- and numerical modelling. The AA. focus on the example of West Antarctica. They discuss 2 examples of the ways in which numerical models offer significant potential for testing ‘glacial geomorphological’ hypotheses of continental glacial landscape evolution
- and smaller-scale landform development. They close by identifying some future challenges in glacial geomorphology.

- The aim of this review is to introduce some key examples showing the role of Earth surface processes, the traditional subject of geomorphology, within the interacting Earth system. The paper considers three examples of environmental systems in which
- geomorphology plays a key role: (1) links between topography, tectonics, and atmospheric circulation; (2) links between geomorphic processes and biogeochemical cycles; and (3) links between biological processes and the Earth’s surface. In conclusion, key

- The trajectory of geomorphology
- Special Issue : The future of geomorphology

- Modern geomorphology was founded in the nineteenth century as an exercise of historical interpretation of landscapes. After the mid-twentieth century it dominantly became a quest to understand the processes by which landscapes are modified
- . The period also saw the emergence of an applied geomorphology. Toward the end of the twentieth century the subject was transformed by improved technologies for remote sensing and surveying of Earth’s surface, the advent of personal computation and of large
- -scale computation, and important developments of absolute dating techniques. These technical innovations in turn promoted recognition of geomorphology as a ‘system science’ and facilitated the reintegration of tectonics into geomorphology. Finally

- Most tectonic geomorphology research is concerned with rivers, but glaciers, debris flows and hillslope processes also play a key role in hypotheses linking climate to tectonics, via surface processes, while submarine geomorphology has barely been
- into geomorphic process ‘laws’, and demonstrating key tectonic geomorphology hypotheses. The review concludes with thoughts on future research directions.
