It is suggested that the global sustainability debate would benefit from more active participation by geomorphologists and that geomorphology would itself benefit by embracing sustainable development research more explicitly. Agenda 21's action
programs, comprising 40 priority research areas, is seen to require geomorphological expertise; it is also argued that solutions to the identified problems can only be anticipated through interdisciplinary collaboration.

This paper summarises the new data emerged from geomorphological field research on the Szentendre Island, on the Danube north of Budapest. Based upon empirical research a geomorphological map of the island was drawn. - (JS)
Geomorphological events and landform change. The Centenary Lecture to the Department of Geography, University of Heidelberg

was a precursor and has considerable importance for geomorphology, even though he exaggerated the effect of the sea, and underestimated valley formation to an inhibiting degree. The A. then studies the nature of event geomorphology (the nature of processes, event
Geomorphological survey for mass-movement hazard assessment
Earthquake ; Geomorphological mapping ; Heavy rain ; Japan ; Landslide ; Mass movement ; Mountain ; Natural hazards ; Slope dynamics ; Volcano
Geomorphological survey is very useful for hazard assessment of mountainous area. This paper deals with basic ideas and mapping method of mass-movement hazard assessment survey from the geomorphological viewpoint.
Palaeochannels on the North China Plain: palaeoriver geomorphology
Variations in the geomorphology of the North China Plain are related to differences between river deposits. The river deposits from different periods form the various geomorphological features; different combinations of palaeochannels form different
geomorphological regions; different kinds of palaeochannels form different kinds of micro-geomorphology. In this paper, the AA. divide the area into geomorphological bodies. It also has significance for economic development.

Ouvrage collectif. Sélection d'articles résumant le cours intensif en Géomorphologie appliquée qui a eu lieu à l'Université de Lisbonne en juin 1996 dans le cadre d'ERASMUS. Panorama actualisé sur les recherches en cours et les travaux de
Teaching geomorphology through spreadsheet modelling
Concept ; Geomorphology ; Glacial features ; Mass movement ; Model ; Modelling ; Numerical model ; Slope ; Teaching ; Teaching of geography
This paper discusses the specific use of microcomputer spreadsheets as a tool for teaching modelling in the context of geomorphology. 4 parts of this discussion include: the pedagogical goals of the modelling approach, the intellectual process
Geomorphological maps for Japanese volcanoes by Geographical Survey Institute, Japan
Applied geomorphology ; Catastrophe ; Classification ; Debris flow ; Forecast ; Geographical information system ; Geomorphological map ; Japan ; Land use ; Natural hazards ; Volcanic eruption ; Volcanism ; Volcano
Geographical Survey Institute is going to produce Land condition maps of volcano about active volcanoes given the priority by the Geodesy Council. This paper introduces these land condition maps of volcano and other geomorphological maps
Geomorphological zoning for flood inundation using satellite data
The AA. investigated geomorphological features on the central plain of Thailand utilizing satellite remote sensing data and made geomorphological land classification map showing flood-stricken area. This map is useful for planning of flood control
works. The AA. classified land form units in the central plain of Thailand as following; delta, tidal flat, lagoon, mud spit, back marsh, natural levee, fan and former river course and so on. After that they transfer geomorphological land classification
Geomorphological river channel reconnaissance for river analysis, engineering and management
Applied geomorphology ; Bank erosion ; Channel geometry ; England ; Environmental conservation ; Flood ; Fluvial processes ; Habitat ; Hydraulic works ; River bed ; Survey ; United Kingdom
Geomorphological studies involving river reconnaissance, analysis (both qualitative and quantitative) and assessment can supply information on the form and physical processes operating in a fluvial system. This information is of value to river
engineers and managers wishing to work with, rather than against, nature when undertaking engineering and maintenance operations or devising management policies. The utility of geomorphological river reconnaissance is illustrated using a case study from
A geomorphological justification of river channel reconnaissance surveys
Applied geomorphology ; Bank erosion ; Ecology ; England ; Environmental conservation ; Fluvial processes ; Hydraulic works ; Model ; Photointerpretation ; River bed ; Survey ; United Kingdom
This paper presents arguments to demonstrate: 1) that reconnaissance surveys are the only viable source of relevant geomorphological data for many projects; 2) that reconnaissance complements other components of integrated and multidisciplinary
afforded to the discipline of geomorphology by the surveys. Finally, comments are made on the potential for developing standardized approaches.
A geomorphological approach to sustainable planning and management of the coastal zone of Kuwait
Coastal environment ; Coastal geomorphology ; Coastal management ; Coastal protection ; Ecosystem ; Hydrocarbon ; Intertidal zone ; Kuwait ; Land use ; Pollution ; Sediment transport
This paper demonstrates how the study of coastal geomorphology can provide a valuable understanding that might form a basis from which planners can develop sound proposals and policies for the sustainable development and management of the coastal
region and its resources. The paper is based on work carried out in the mid 1980s as part of a multi-disciplinary research project which aimed to establish an environmental database for the coastal region of Kuwait. The geomorphological information
