- Moraines and late glacial activity in southern Varmland, southwestern Sweden
- Glacial features ; Moraine ; Palaeogeography ; Quaternary ; Sweden
- On the basis of ice-marginal formations in southern Värmland the dynamics of the Scandinavian inland ice during and after the Younger Dryas event are discussed. It is concluded that the ice sheet was two-centred. The activity from a centre
- in the high-mountain area in southern Norway just reached into western Värmland. The activity from a centre over the Bothnian Bay, persisting through the Preboreal, approached the region north of Lake Vänern.
- Dynamics of glacial and periglacial processes as evidence of global change
- Freeze-thaw cycle ; Glacial activity ; Glacial features ; Glacial landform ; Global change ; Periglacial features ; Quaternary
- Glacial and periglacial processes, their landforms, influences of cryogenic destruction, and repeated freezing and thawing effects in rocks and their weathered mantle are described. Main features and dynamics of present-day and former glacial
- and periglacial environments are presented as an evidence of significant global change of various landscapes in the Quaternary epoch. Knowledge of glacial and periglacial processes and landforms provides a background for understanding the present-day global change

- , and somewhat surprisingly not to glacial activity. Removal of erosive products and deepening of the fjord below sea level is due to glacial erosion.
- Antarctica ; Cold area ; Deglaciation ; Glacial erosion ; Glacial features ; Glacial tectonics ; Meltwater ; Model ; Moraine
- This paper deals with the morphology and sedimentology of these moraines and sedimentary processes that can be studied at the present glacier ice-cliff. Further, it presents a model for ice-marginal moraine formation in cold and arid glacial
- environments and discusses the formation of moraines by polar glaciers which are wholly on partly frozen to their bed. The dynamics of the Mackay glacier and its recent activity are discussed in the light of the evidence of the moraines.
- Recent fluctuations of Glaciar Pío Xi, Patagonia : discussion of a glacial surge hypothesis
- Chile ; Dendrochronology ; Glacial surge ; Glacier ; Glacier fluctuation ; Patagonia ; Remote sensing
- Although there is a general glacier retreat in mid-latitude Patagonia, Glaciar Pío XI has been advancing during the last 50 years. Author postulate that the advance periods have corresponded to glacial surges. Four models of explanation
- of the surges were tested - increased basal water pressure, increased geothermal activity, increased precipitation, and reduction in the rate of calving due to proglacial sedimentation. data used was insufficient to support any one of the proposed models. - (SLD)
- Glacial and periglacial phenomena in Ethiopia : a review
- Ethiopia ; Freeze-thaw cycle ; Frost action ; Glacial features ; Glaciation ; High mountain ; Mountain ; Periglacial features ; Permafrost ; Pleistocene
- The glacial and periglacial geomorphology for the Simen and Bale Mountains in Ethiopia is reviewed. The Simen Mountains are mostly absent of relict perglacial landforms and today host a variety of miniature cryogenic phenomena. The Bale Mountains
- host a few localized large relict cryogenic landforms (e.g. stone stripes), suggesting past sporadic permafrost. A variety of regional factors may have contributed to the more extensive periglacial activity in southern Ethiopia than in the higher Simen
- Quaternary glacial history of the Mediterranean mountains
- Bibliography ; C 14 dating ; Geochronology ; Glacial cycle ; Glaciation ; Mediterranean States ; Mediterranean area ; Mountain ; Palaeoclimate ; Periglacial features ; Quaternary
- The evidence for glacial and periglacial activity has been studied for over 120 years and it is possible to identify 3 phases of development in this area of research. First, a pioneer phase, second, a mapping phase, and, third, an advanced phase
- characterised by detailed understanding of the geochronology of glacial sequences using radiometric dating alongside detailed sedimentological and stratigraphical analyses. It is now clear from radiometric dating programmes that the Mediterranean region have
- been glaciated during multiple glacial cycles. The most extensive phases of glaciation appear to have occurred during the Middle Pleistocene.

- Quantitative estimates of the effect of climate change on dust storm activity in Australia during the Last Glacial Maximum
- Quantitative estimates are made of the effect of climate change upon dust activity during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), which peaked 18,000 years ago, using present-day measurements of the occurence of dust storms recalculated in the light
- LGM dust activity.
- Varve studies at Hector Lake, Alberta, Canada, and the relationship between glacial activity and sedimentation
- A comparison of sedimentation rate records (Cs chronology) with recent regional glacial history indicates that high sedimentation rates of one to a few decades duration occur either during and immediately following periods of moraine deposition (ie
- , maximum ice stands) or during periods of rapid ice recession. Comparison of sedimentary records with somewhat longer term glacial and vegetation records indicates that sedimentation rate variations of several centuries duration closely parallel changes

- Landform-sediment assemblages associated with two ice-dammed lakes, one active and one fossil, at Heinabergsjοkull in southeast Iceland are described. These data are vey important for the interpretation of Pleistocene ice-dammed lakes.

- and that glacial activity is limited to the expansion of local glaciers during oxygen isotope stage 4 or late in stage 5 and during the Late Weichselian.
- This paper reports stratigraphic and morphologic data from the Mc Vitiepynten area, northern Prins Karl Forland that further constrain the Weichselian glacial history of Prins Karls Forland and highlight the question of the westward extension

- The results from several years of monitoring the suspended-sediment transport in the proglacial Tarfalajåkk Creek are used to calculate the time necessary for the creation of the Storglaciären glacial trough in the Kennekaise massif, northern Sweden.
- A methodology to interpret downvalley lake sediments as records of Neoglacial activity: Coast Mountains, British Columbia, Canada
- British Columbia ; Canada ; Glacial features ; Grain size distribution ; Holocene ; Lacustrine sediment ; Methodology ; Organic materials ; Palaeogeography ; Sediment budget ; Sedimentology ; Varves
- Downvalley lake sediments from four lakes within Kwoiek Creek watershed, Coast Mountains, are examined with the aim of reconstructing Holocene glacial activity. A methodology is outlined which, through sediment source-sink analysis, separates
- the glacial-derived sediment of interest from material from other sources. Organic matter content is shown to be a good inverse indicator of sedimentation rates at two different time-scales.
- After the maximum of the last glaciation three main periods of aeolian activity may be distinguished : at the end of the Late Pleniglacial, in the middle of the Late Glacial (Older Dryas) and at the very end of the Late Glacial (latest part
- of the Younger Dryas). These three phases and the respective mode of activity as well as the resulting forms and sediments are compared.

- The AA. describe and explain a regional topographic and geomorphic expression of sub-glacial volcanism, namely that at Kverkfjöll, Iceland. This area comprises a series of parallel sub-glacially-erupted volcanic edifices, which together give
- advances during the Holocene, at least one of which at Kverkfjöll probably coincided with volcanic activity and a jökulhlaup.

- Iceland is one of the youngest territory of the Earth's surface. Together with glaciers volcanic activities contribute to another risk process called jökulhlaup. It is a large-scale flood event generated by a sudden drainage of the water contained
