In the second half of the 20th century, Slovenian geographers gradually specialized into increasingly narrower areas of interest. Academy member Ivan Gams focused his research and teaching on karst. His exceptional research breadth is reflected
in the variety of contributions in all areas of physical and regional geography. Ivan Gams’s contributions in other areas of geography reflect his restless and critical research spirit, which helped shape Slovenia’s social developments in the recent past. - (IKR)
In his long career as a researcher, Ivan Gams was focused mainly on karstology, although he contributed significantly to physical geography and geography of natural hazards as well. These topics are central to more than 80% of Gams's scientific
and professional articles. Since Gams wrote more than 150 scientific articles in just a few decades, he is considered one of the most important Slovenian physical geographers. He was also the pioneer of studying natural hazards by means of modern geographical

Ivan Gams made his greatest contributions to regional geography in the second half of the 20th century with the development of methodology, although the theory of regional geography was in decline. The role of thematic cartography, geographic
information systems and the humanistic component strengthened while regional geography revived with the Slovenia’s independence in 1991. Gams enriched it with his regionalization schemes, secondary-school textbooks, leading the regional geography research

Ivan Gams is Slovenia's best known researcher of karst. He started with researching the karst surface and underground and published several publications. He focused on issues to which he dedicated his life and which were also widely recognized
by professional public at home and abroad (e.g. corrosion intensity determined by the hardness of water, the discharges of karst rivers and springs, and the method of limestone tablets). Gams also dealt with the geomorphology, definition and evolution of karst
The AA. examined a generalized additive modeling (GAM) based approach to provide new theoretical insights into process–environment relationships. More precisely, they (i) simulated the shapes of the relationships between geomorphic processes
and environmental variables based on GAM and (ii) compared the shapes of the simulated response curves to (a) the hypothetical curves based on theory and (b) the response curves produced by generalized linear modeling (GLM). The study is based on empirical
