- (MP)
Aeolian sediment flux decay: non-linear behaviour on developing deflation lag surfaces
This study reports on a series of wind tunnel experiments in which rapid, detailed measurements of the sediment flux, wind profile and surface geometry were made, as the number and exposure of non-erodible roughness elements increased on test
surfaces undergoing deflation. It is shown that the velocity profile data are essential to understanding the physical processes driving the flux decay. The co-dependence of the sediment flux, shear velocity and surface geometric roughness is emphasized.

The flux profile of a blowing sand cloud : a wind tunnel investigation
The AA. report the wind tunnel results of systematic tests of the flux profiles of different sized sands at different free-stream wind velocities. The results reveal that within the 60-cm near-surface layer, the decay of blown sand flux with height
can be expressed by an exponential function. The AA. define the physical significance of the parameters in flux profiles and their relationship to grain size and wind velocity. They also discuss the average saltation height of blown sand
Vertical profiles of the horizontal mass flux of blown sand are investigated experimentally using a passive vertical array in a wind tunnel. This investigation is complemented by the measurements of the longitudinal profiles of mass flux using
a horizontal sand trap. The experiments were conducted with 2 test sands and 5 different stream velocities. A simple equation applicable for both the vertical and the longitudinal sand mass flux variations is introduced and the parameters are estimated from
The long-term geographical distribution of the winter, meridional eddy sensible heat flux is shown and is compared with the flux variation over the winters of 1976-1987. Results indicate that while the winter mean total eddy flux possesses the same
-stationary fluxes, and are associated with the Pacific North American teleconnection pattern in its positive phase.

ground observations at 5 sites in different ecological systems in China. The AA. are now using the APEIS-FLUX data to develop an integrated model, which can simulate the regional water, heat, and carbon fluxes. Discussion of the results.
Spatial analysis of the factors contributing to the relationship between the transient, meridional eddy sensible, and latent heat flux in the southern hemisphere
Analyse en composantes principales ; Analyse spatiale ; Climat ; Dynamique de l'atmosphère ; Flux thermique ; Humidité atmosphérique ; Hémisphère Sud ; Monde ; Prévision ; Statistique spatiale ; Température ; Variabilité climatique
In this paper principal component analysis (PCA) and singular value decomposition (SVD) are used to define the importance of the variables contributing to the relationship between the transient latent and sensible heat fluxes and to show
their temporal and spatial variation. Both methods of analysis produced 2 very important uncorrelated modes of variability in January and July, indicating that the transient heat fluxes are influenced by few controlling factors. The AA. suggest that these modes
of variability represent the influences of the meridional temperature gradient, atmospheric moisture, and activity within the source and sink regions of the transient heat fluxes.
Impacts of dams on the sediment flux of the Pearl River, southern China
Based on datasets begun in the 1950s of water and sediment flux at the main gauging stations and measured deposition rates in some reservoirs, this paper examines the impact of dam construction on the sediment flux of the Pearl River. The results
and conclusions show that the sediment flux of the Pearl River has shown a drastically decreasing trend since the mid-1980s, which is attributed mainly to deposition in the reservoirs. A further decrease in sediment flux into the sea is expected to occur
