An investigation of domestic water inadequacy in 1995 identified Lepelfontein as a settlement with an insufficient supply of freshwater, initiating a pilot study on fog harvesting aimed at improving freshwater supply and water security
A geographical information system to manage water resources and fishing fauna
Fishing ; Geographical information system ; Italy ; Mountain ; Northern Italy ; Resource management ; Water ; Water resources ; Watershed
This paper describes the main characteristics of a gaographical information system designed and implemented to manage hydrographic and fishing resources in a mountain region. A case study, for the But stream basin (located in the North Eastern Italy
), is also described. This GIS, developed with the help of Regional Fishery Agency, gives a new way to manage and resolve problems and underlines how the management of hydrographic and fishing resources can be improved using inovative computerised tools
The good, the bad, and the hands-on : constructs of public participation, anglers, and lay management of water environments

In the process converting the estuary into a tidally-damped, fresh-water system, a study was commissioned to evaluate alternative management policies for that system. Policies were defined in terms of alternative programs for sluice operation

Counting fish : performative data, anglers' knowledge-practices and environmental measurement
England ; Environmental management ; Fishing ; Knowledge ; Leisure ; United Kingdom ; Water resources
Using a case study of recreational angling, the A. shows how fish in English rivers and lakes are counted and anglers act as lay or amateur knowledge-producers in the state's metrological knowledge-practices. She shows how, to support environmental
measurement, the state manages not only the environment and fish, but also anglers as lay knowledge-producers, using both regulation and economic incentives.
Characterizing the pelagic fish assemblage in Lake Paanajärvi : scarce stocks and large individuals

The structure of fish stocks in the pelagic areas of Paanajärvi, a deep northern lake in a natural state, was characterized by means of echo surveys and test fishing in 1992-1994. The pelagic fish densities were in general relatively large
, their size distribution resembling more that of pelagic areas in practically unfished natural lakes than that of exploited lakes. The structure of the pelagic fish assemblage in Paanajärvi stresses the importance of nature conservation as means of evaluating
Starting from the increasing importance of fresh and salt water contact problems for water supply and draining in opencast mining the present paper describes the hydrogeological situations causing jeopardy by salinization of pumped groundwater. (HL).
Modeling hydrological variability of freshwater resources in the Rio Cobre watershed, Jamaica

The aim of this study is to characterize, model and analyze the temporal variability of hydrological processes in the Rio Cobre watershed, Jamaica using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Determination of the temporal hydrological water
the measured and simulated flows. The spatiotemporal distribution of hydrological processes was determined. It is highlighted that 52% of rainfall is lost by evapotranspiration and that the groundwater contributes 42% to the water yield.
