The study presents an outline of the systems analysis of the terra firme lowland forest N of Manaus, Brazil. The study deals with the water and element cycles, with litterfall and decomposition, and makes some points of the root-mat zone, the heart
of the tropical forest system. Emphasis is also given to studies on the physical and chemical background of the latosolic sediments around Manaus which mainly form the matrix of the terra firme forest in this particular area.
