- A comparison of modeled flood characteristics to measurements of the 2002 flood on the Guadalupe River, Texas
- The central Texas flood of 2002
- Comparative study ; Flood ; Forecast ; Model ; Pic discharge ; Stream ; Texas ; United States of America
- This paper compares a model and an empirical calculation for calculating flood probabilities and associated peak discharges for the upper Guadalupe watershed. Assuming an increase from tributaries into Canyon Lake, the estimate of peak discharge
- obtained from USGS data much more closely matches the recorded flow than the results from the National Flood Frequency program.

- Caesium-137 dating applied to slackwater flood deposits of the Llobregat River, NE Spain
- Catalonia ; Flood ; Geochemistry ; Geochronology ; Isotope analysis ; Mediterranean area ; Palaeohydrology ; Sedimentary ; Spain
- During a palaeoflood study of the Llobregat River in Catalonia, analysis of Cs 137 was carried out on slackwater flood deposits to obtain an improved flood chronology for the most recent flood sediments. The onset of measured caesium activity
- in the sedimentary profiles permitted the deposits to be divided between those from floods that occurred before the mid-1950s and those from events after this period. Combining the information derived from the slackwater flood stratigraphy, the minimum discharge
- estimates associated with the flood deposits, Cs 137 analysis and the instrumental peak discharge series, it was possible to identify the particular flood events responsible for the majority of the slackwater flood units.

- Rainfall-driven Episodic Flood Events : are they a major factor in moulding New South Wales arid land vegetation patterns ?
- Arid area ; Australia ; Environmental management ; Flood ; New South Wales ; Over-grazing ; Precipitation ; Vegetation ; Vegetation dynamics
- This paper reports the response of arid land plant species to high-rainfall-driven episodic flood events and how grazing pressure from native and introduced herbivores can impact on native species response. A systematic study was conducted
- to understand the botanical composition in flooded and control areas on 25 m2 fenced and unfenced plots subjected to flooding and non-flooding. For 6 years following flooding, species richness in the flooded area was twice that of unflooded areas. In particular
- , 27 native species from 13 families were recorded both in the enclosed and open plots located in the flooded area.

- Quantitative geomorphologic analysis to evaluate flood hazards
- Flood ; Forecast ; Italy ; Natural hazards ; Toscana ; Watershed
- The aim of this study is to evaluate flood hazards through the use of quantitative pregeomorphic methods, which were already applied to estimate mass movement hazards and accelerated erosion hazards in some Italian areas. The study area is the Fiume
- Ombrone drainage basin (Central Italy), where wide zones of the main valley floors have been recently flooded. In the last decade of the past century the frequency of these hazardous events has increased. Results obtained allowed the identification
- of zones prone to flood hazard and the evaluation of their hazard index. - (NF)

- Reconstructing the ca. 100-year flood in Northern Thailand
- Discharge ; Flood ; Model ; Natural hazards ; Palaeohydrology ; Perception ; Thailand ; Watershed
- The AA. use a hydraulic model to produce estimates of discharge based on PSI (Palaeo-Stage Indicator) evidence from large floods for a study reach of the Mae Chaem River, Thailand. This study utilised several modern , gauged floods as the basis
- for calibration of Manning's n within the hydraulic model. The results significantly increase the perception of flood risk for the area, and this palaeohydrological case study represents the first for the region.

- Czech Republic ; Flood ; Human impact ; Methodology ; River basin ; Spatial distribution
- subsequently, allowing for overall quantitative evaluation of the river network transformation intensity, and identification of critical elements in the river network from the viewpoint of potential affecting of the course and consequences of floods
- . The methodology has been applied to the Sázava river basin in the Czech Republic, hit by the extreme flood from snow melt in 2006. - (EN)

- Dryness-wetness change and regional differentiation of flood-drought disasters in Guangdong during 1480-1940 AD
- Catastrophe ; China ; Climatic change ; Climatic variation ; Comparative study ; Drought ; Flood ; Greenland ; Guangdong ; Ice core ; Isotope analysis ; Oxygen 18
- Based on the historical records of the drought and flood disasters during 1480-1940 AD, this paper reconstructs the sequences of wetness index (WI) and drought and flood disasters. The AA. find a good identical relationship between the fluctuation
- in drought-flood regional differentiation, but the eastern part is relatively stable, and the are of the Pearl River Delta shows stable condition of more flood disasters.

- The central Texas flood of 2002
- Channel geometry ; Flood ; Forecast ; River bed ; Roughness ; Stream ; Texas ; United States of America

- Geomorphic and sedimentological signature of a two-phase outburst flood from moraine-dammed Queen Bess Lake, British Columbia, Canada
- Alluvial cone ; British Columbia ; Canada ; Erratic boulder ; Flood ; Glacial lake ; Glacial surge ; Glacier ; Lake ; Moraine ; Palaeohydrology ; Pic discharge ; Sedimentology ; Stream ; Valley
- On 12 August 1997, the lower part of Diadem Glacier in the southern Coast Mountains fell into Queen Bess Lake and produced a train o large waves. The waves overtopped the broad end moraine at the east end of the lake and flooded the valley
- of the west fork of Nostetuko River. The displacement waves also incised the outflow channel across the moraine. Stratigraphic and sedimentologic evidence supports the conclusion that the flood had two phases, one related to wave overtopping and a second
- to breach formation. Empirical equations were used to calculate the peak discharge of the flood at various points along the west fork of the Nostetuko valley and to describe the attenuation of the flood wave.

- Flood ; Habitat ; Housing ; Hungary ; Impact ; Rural settlement ; Stream ; Village
- The present study is an attempt to outline the role of natural factors (with a special reference to floods) played in the emergence and evolution of settlement network as a whole and in the variation of the pattern of built-up areas within
- the individual settlements. A common feature of the five sample villages selected is that they had been damaged considerably during some of the great floods of the past decades. The conclusion of the investigation is that the safety of the Upper Tisza Region from
- floods is far from being satisfactory even nowadays. - (JS)
