Long-term impacts of the 1997 floods in the Morava River Basin
Czech Republic ; Flood ; Impact study ; Natural hazards
In 1997, disastrous floods have been carried out of the Morava River and other Moravian rivers. The long-term impacts of the flood event on the landscape and population have been examined. The main causes of the flood damage are connected
with the formulation of the settlement pattern during industrialization and urbanization. The main geographical methods of flood protection include the relocation of outside inundated areas, technical controle and the adaptation to flood risks too. - (MS)
1998's floods in the Changjiang River and the land use/land cover change in the upper and middle-lower reaches in the past 50 years

Flood of Changjiang River (the Yangtze) in 1998 was so serious that it arose a keen concern about its causes. In this paper, the AA. bring out a brief history of the flood disaster happened to the Changjiang River Valley in the last six centuries
and analyze the causes for the frequent flood disasters based on the land use and land cover change in the upper and middle-lower reaches of the Changjiang River.
Sedimentary records of large Holocene floods from the middle reaches of the Yellow River, China

Slackwater deposits have been used as evidence for the magnitude and frequency of palaeofloods which occurred prior to gauged and historical data sets, e.g., Holocene extreme flood reconstruction in North America and Australia. The slackwater
deposits from Xiaolangdi Reach of the Yellow River have been identified and related to floods according to both eyewitness accounts and the analysis of sediments. The technique successfully delineated the peak flood level and estimated a discharge
of the 1994 AD flood in the Yellow River. The prediction of Holocene large magnitude floods according to the sedimentary records will also be discussed.
This paper analyses the hydrological processes of flood events in three Mediterranean ephemeral streams, taking into account the peculiarities of the rainfall and morphology patterns of the study area. Daily and other detailed information (every 5
min) has been used to study rainfall-runoff relationships, spatial and temporal rainfall variability and flash flood characteristics.
Natural and human factors in recent Central Valley floods

Paper reviews flooding events of 1986 and 1997 in California's Central Valley, when subtropical storms precipitated heavily over watersheds draining into the Valley. Precipitation levels and patterns of flooding were different. After 1997, officials

Echo-sounding data recorded in the Black Sea in 1969 imaged a chain of hills 5- to 150-m high at a depth of 2000-2200 m that resemble hills on the lower continental rise. Like those hills, the features in the western Black Sea may have been created
by bottom currents. The easterly flowing currents inferred to have formed the hills may be related to a catastrophic flood of the Black Sea from the Sea of Marmara 7150 yr ago.
The palaeohydrology of Nahal Zin, a 1400 km2 catchment in the hyperarid Negev Desert, is inferred from slackwater deposits and palaeostage indicators in a canyon near its lower end. The palaeoflood record includes 28 floods over the last 2000 years
. The clusters of floods around 1000 years BP and again during the last 60 years are characterized by high flow magnitudes. Periods with many floods correspond well to periods with high Dead Sea levels and are probably relatively wet periods. Fluctuations
in the frequency of floods are typical of periods of transition from one climate regime to another.
A flood event occurred on 30 September 1997, in 3 catchments, Torrealvilla, Salada and Nolgate, which were being monitored for morphological change. Detailed topographic surveys were made before and after the flood and from these DEMs of difference
Landscape state change in the semi-arid Sabie River, Kruger National Park, in response to flood and drought
Arid area ; Climatic variability ; Drought ; Flood ; Impact ; National park ; Precipitation ; Riparian vegetation ; Seasonal variation ; Semi-arid area ; South Africa ; Stream ; Water regime
Semi-arid rivers are subject to highly variable flow regimes as a result of strongly seasonal and unpredictable rainfall. Riparian landscape state changes resulting from a prolonged low flow period followed by a high magnitude flood were examined
concentration and water discharge were analyzed for 7 floods which occurred from 1991 to 1996 in summer and autumn. Different patterns of hysteresis in relation between suspended sediment and discharge were related to types and locations of active sediment
Persistence of historic flood impact on a small sand-bed stream - Wellums Creek, New South Wales, Australia

This study demonstrates that historic flood-induced channel changes have not only occurred on major trunk rivers but in small tributary catchments as well. Another major focus is to address the relevance of not only external controls

thunderstorms generated 3 distinct erosive responses from each of 3 basins. The factors that best distinguish between debris-flow producing and flood-producing drainages are drainage basin morphology and lithology.
