This study examines the variability of the duration and frequency of Santa Ana winds due to ElNiño over a 33-year period in the western United States. Daily weather maps and NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis were used to study large-scale upper-level
and surface circulation patterns during wind events. A Student's t-test was used to determine significant changes in the winds during March of ElNiño winters. A significant decrease in the duration and frequency of wind events was found in March during El
Niño. This can be attributed to the decrease in strength and frequency of the Great Basin high pressure and the increase in wintertime cyclones in southern California.

The eastern tropical Pacific and areas along its fringe in South America experienced the most intense ElNino occurrence of the twentieth century beween June 1982 and July 1983. At least twenty-five spells of bad weather caused extensive damage
areas. In the ocean reduced fish stocks caused starvation among seabirds and mammals. The altiplano highlands suffered severe drought. There is a coincidence between past ElNino occurrences and tropical volcanic activity. The eruption of El Chinchon
in April 1982 appears to be closely related to ElNino 1982-83.

– (JPB)

The article deals with the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the ElNiño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in northeast Brazil. The analysis engages with the dependence of the inter-annual vegetation from rainfall time series
and the consequences of ENSO-abnormity in the last four ElNiño decades (1982-2006). - (IfL)

Snow avalanches are a cold-season natural hazard in the Glacier National Park (GNP), Montana. This study examined local newspaper reports of avalanches during the period from 1949 to 1997 and found a tendency for ElNiño years to be associated
with a decrease in snow avalanches in the region. This decrease in frequency may be caused by the below-normal precipitation that occurs in the region during ElNiño years. Additional factors, such as primary storm-track direction, and temperature cycling also

Monthly rainfall data from 33 stations over 48 years are analyzed to document the effects of the 1997/1998 ElNiño event on Indonesian rainfall. During the ElNiño year from March 1997 to February 1998, virtually the whole country had rainfall below

Increased awareness of the relationships between global climate changes occurring in the tropics and their teleconnections outside the tropics dictate a reevaluation of the role of phenomena such as ElNiño-Southern Oscillation on the risk
of wildfire. One simple way of illustrating the relationship between ENSO and wildfire occurrence is the use of an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) on wildfire data that has been categorized according to ENSO status (ElNiño, La Niña, and neutral years
