There is danger of moving political ecology toward even greater emphasis on specificity and difference and pushing consideration of broader-scale processes farther into the background. One response to these challenges is to reconsider the concept
of regional political ecologies. Regional approaches can retain the greatest strengths of recent political ecology in revealing the importance of local-scale social dynamics while situating these dynamics within broader scales of regional and global processes.

This article examines the urban political ecology of post-industrial Scottish towns (Greengairs and Ravenscraig) with the goal of unravelling the understanding and the coping mechanisms of environmentally deprived residents. The towns are permeated
by a widespread, often dissimulated, political ecology that is nonetheless always present. Empirical results demonstrate that a more comprehensive handling of the political ecology of the urban is crucial in order to halt the sources of marginalisation
and ecological degradation.

in political ecology. Finally, the radical pretensions of the field are considered in order to show how political ecologists have shown through their work the need for radical change even as they have yet to specify the contours of an alternative social
