A regional geomorphological survey showed that the Plio-Quaternary horst of Sabzevar played a significant role in providing water in the whole area from the Bronze Age up to now and that the qanât system had developed at the Achaemenid period
. At the back of the horst, a graben housing an important water table in its Quaternary alluvium has been found. Hydrological and geomorphological study shows that the overflowing of the water table provided a perennial flow. The archaeological data allow
confirming these assumptions. The development of the qanât system then allowed irrigation of the whole hillfoot of the Sabzevar horst but in return provoked a lowering of the water table level, that massive pumping worsened.
Weathering, Sr fluxes, and controls on water chemistry in the Lake Qinghai catchment, NE Tibetan Plateau
This paper presents the first 87Sr/86Sr analyses of waters from the Lake Qinghai drainage system to understand how catchment weathering constrains river water chemistry and how the lake develops its current characteristic chemical compositions
. It is based on analyses of a large suite of water samples from diverse tributaries and lakes of the basin. In combination with major ion concentrations, the AA. address the mass balance for the Sr isotopes in the contemporary lake and demonstrate that Sr
isotope ratio serves as a useful proxy to distinguish different water sources to the lakes.

Anthropogenic lakes (lakes that have developed in mined-out pits as a consequence of min¬eral raw material mining) exhibit many interesting phenomena. Specific water features are the most remarkable, including physical, chemical and the biological
characteristics. The author's primary objectives are to present some physical and chemical symptoms of meromixis at selected localities, to discuss the mutual interaction between the physical and chemical characteristics of lake water and to explore some probable
Characterization of complex fluvial systems using remote sensing of spatial and temporal water level variations in the Amazon, Congo, and Brahmaputra Rivers
This paper illustrates the utility of existing remote sensing measurements of water temporal changes and spatial slope to characterize 2 complex fluvial environments. First, repeat-pass interferometric SAR measurements from the Japanese Earth
Resources Satellite are used to compare and contrast floodplain processes in the Amazon and Congo River basins. Measurements of temporal water level changes over the 2 areas reveal clearly different hydraulic processes at work. Second, Shuttle Radar
Topography Mission measurements of water elevation are used to derive water slope over the braided Brahmaputra river system. In combination with in situ bathymetry measurements, water elevation and slope allow one to calculate discharge estimates within 2.3

Water repellency and pore clogging at early successional stages of microbiotic crusts on inland dunes, Brandenburg, NE Germany
Utilization of the mineral substrate at early stages of microbiotic crusts was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water repellency indices were measured using the ethanol/water microinfiltrometer method, and steady state water
. It was concluded that a new phase of crust succession was accompanied by easier wettability but slower infiltration. Transition from hydrophobicity to pore clogging as ruling mechanisms causing water run-off may occur during wetting of individual biological crusts
Water erosion response to rainfall and land use in different drought-level years in a loess hilly area of China

rainfall-erosion data and an aridity index. Then, water erosion dynamics involving five land uses (cropland, alfalfa, scrubland, woodland and grassland) in the three typical years were analyzed. Results and discussion about erosion control : namely
, it is not possible to judge water erosion degree just from annual rainfall; more attention should be paid to the specific rainfall variables and distributions.

Recent changes of water and sediment load in the Yellow River basin, China
This study considers the annual hydrologic series of the water discharge and sediment load of the Yellow River basin obtained from 15 gauging stations (10 mainstream, 5 tributaries). The Mann-Kendall test method was adopted to detect both gradual
and abrupt change of hydrological series since the 1950s. With the exception of the area draining to the Upper Tangnaihai station, results indicate that both water discharge and sediment load have decreased significantly (p
that the abrupt change of the water discharge from the late 1980s to the early 1990s arose from human extraction, and that the abrupt change in sediment load was linked to disturbance from reservoir construction.
