Negotiating technology - (Re)considering the use of GIS by indigenous peoples

The dialectical context of GIS is explored by (re)considering the opportunities and challenges of applying GIS as a cross-cultural communication device. A position is negotiated which interprets GIS as conditionally empowering provided
that indigenous peoples consider their symbolic representation in, and physical access to GIS before making an initial investment in the technology.

Rill initiation : concepts and experimental evaluation on badland slopes in Erosion budgets and their hydrologic basis.
In the Dinosaur Badlands most surface materials are so dispersive and highly erodible that flow concentration alone is the necessary condition for rill initiation. The experiments carried out in this research project have demonstrated clear
differences in the processes of flow concentration on shale and sandstone slopes. Flow concentration and rill initiation apparently will not occur on sandstone slopes which lack a shale cap. Once rills have been initiated, they will continue to develop even
if the conditions necessary for their initiation are no longer fulfilled. In the badlands the relationship is exemplified by the continued development of rills on sandstones slopes even after capping shale units have disappeared.

The variations in erosion rate should depend on and be predictable from the initial moisture content profile and the erosivity of the flow. The present paper presents the results of a series of experiments which were carried out to collect
the necessary data to verify this hypothesis and to establish to what extent knowledge of the initial soil moisture profile can be used to predict time-dependency of erosion rates.
