This article analyses mono-industrialism and the struggle for alternative development through the case of the Roşia Montană gold-mining project in Romania. It examines the socio-economic consequences of the mining project proposed
by the multinational company and reveals the intrinsic limits of mono-industrialism and on the issue of population displacement by development. In the second part of the paper it discusses the feasibility of alternative development solutions for the area.
