In the name of Pauk-Phaw. Myanmar’s China policy since 1948

Under the banner of “Pauk-Phaw” friendship, Myanmar skillfully plays the “China card” and enjoys considerable space in her conduct of foreign relations. With the obligations of that friendship the relations remain smooth. Myanmar has constantly
repositioned her relations with China to her best advantage. The juxtaposition of accommodating China’s regional strategic interest and resisting Chinese influence and interference in Myanmar internal affairs, has been a hallmark of Myanmar’s China policy
. As long as it recognizes the legitimate strategic interests of China in Myanmar, the Myanmar government will be left to conduct its foreign relations within the context of its non-aligned policy. - (GL)
Inhomogeneity characteristics of snow in Northeast China

Based on 1961–2005 observed winter precipitation data in Northeast China, the temporal and spatial variations of snow concentration degree (SCD) and snow concentration period (SCP), together with the circulation characteristics when
there is a higher SCD, are computed and analyzed. Results show that SCD in Northeast China presents a yearly rising tendency and SCP decreases obviously. By referring to the vapor transmission map, it is the vapor moving northwestward along the northern side
of the core that exerts great impacts on Northeast China.

Focusing on mega events in South Africa, China and Brazil, this paper contrasts and critiques the associated image and identity opportunities and risks, as well as comparative motivations for hosting such events. In the context of an increasing
number of mega events being hosted in the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), the paper provides broader continuity and introduces a broader research agenda. - (AJC)
Possible influence of Arctic Oscillation on dust storm frequency in North China

This study has investigated the influence of Arctic Oscillation (AO) on dust storm frequency in North China in spring seasons during 1961–2007. There is a significant linkage between dust storm frequency and AO; a negative (positive) AO phase
is related to an increased (decreased) dust storm frequency in North China. This relationship is closely related to changes in the cold air activity in Mongolia. The cold air activity exerts large impacts on the dust storm frequency; the frequency of cold air
activity over Mongolia not only positively correlates with the dust storm frequency in North China, but also shows a long-term decreasing trend that is an important reason for the long-term decreasing of dust storm frequency in North China.
Spatial patterns of ecological carrying capacity supply-demand balance in China at county level

Firstly, the ecological supply and demand balance was calculated and evaluated, and secondly, the ecological carrying capacity index (ECCI) was derived for each county of China in 2007, and finally this paper systematically evaluated the ecological
carrying capacity supply-demand balance of China. The results showed that ecological deficit appeared to be the main characteristic of ecological carrying capacity supply-demand balance in 2007 of China at county scale. The spatial distribution
of the ecological carrying capacity demand-supply was unbalanced ranging from significant overloading to affluence from southeastern to northwestern part of China. It appeared to be more dominant in regions located at coastal areas which had a generally higher
population density. Along with the rapid development and urbanization trends in China, ecological deficits in these regions will become more severe.

Based on the drought/flood grades of 90 meterological stations over eastern China and summer average sea-level pressure (SLP) during 1850–2008 and BPCCA statistical methods, the coupling relationship between the drought/flood grades and the East
Asian summer SLP is analyzed. The results show that there are 4 typical drought and flood spatial distribution patterns in eastern China, i.e. the distribution of drought/flood in southern China is contrary to the other regions. It is suggested

From July 2008 to August 2008, 72 leaf samples from 22 species and 81 soil samples in the 9 natural forest ecosystems were collected, from north to south along the North-South Transect of Eastern China (NSTEC). Based on these samples, the AA

PnET-CN model describes the biogeochemical cycles of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) and can assist in estimating carbon sequestration potential. For validation of PnET-CN, data from coniferous forest plantations in southern China was used. The results
obtained from the validation test revealed that PnET-CN model can be used to simulate carbon sequestration of planted coniferous forests in southern China to a high level of precision. Sensitivity analysis suggests that great care should be taken

In this study, based on DEM and remote sensing images, multi-scale continental coastlines of China were extracted and the fractal characteristic was analyzed. It is shown that the continental coastline of China fits the fractal model; the scale
effects with fractal dimensions of coastline have significant differences according to uplift and subsidence segments along the continental coastlines of China; the fractal dimension of coastline has significant spatial heterogeneity according
