Past and current trends in environmental change are examined in terms of their impact on biogeochemicalcycles of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur at scales from the local to the global. The major issues concern fossil fuel consumption which influences
all three cycles, and agriculture which affects the carbon and nitrogen cycles in particular. Anthropogenic pertubations of these cycles has given rise to some of the most important environmental issues of the 1990s, notably global climatic change
, acidification and cultural eutrophication. In the light of population growth rates in the next 30 years, biogeochemical pertubations will undoubtedly intensify.

- (VVA)
The development of biogeography as a science has involved the assimilation of both new concepts and new techniques. Stable isotopes have been used in the study of climatic history, the evolution of the biosphere, the biogechemical cycling
geomorphology plays a key role: (1) links between topography, tectonics, and atmospheric circulation; (2) links between geomorphic processes and biogeochemicalcycles; and (3) links between biological processes and the Earth’s surface. In conclusion, key

and utilize the data derived from remote observation. Understanding the importance of land use/land cover to the biogeochemicalcycles is a complex mixture of ecology, chemistry and geomorphology. The question of how to scale up local measurements to use
This review is concerned with the technique of stable isotope analysis (δS 34) as a means of studying the sulphur cycle with particular emphasis on the formation of sulphate evaporites such as gypsum. Gypsum is found in all settings that promote
