During the 1997 summer field season, a grid of 30 survey stations was established on the high ice plateau in order to locate exactly the ice-flow divide between the Llewellyn and Matthes glaciers. Two geophysical methods, seismic reflections
and gravity, were also employed to determine the thickness of the ice on the plateau. These geophysical measurements revealed that the present-day surface ice movement is largely independent of the subglacial topology.

Loess Plateau is located in the transitional zone between the east monsoon climate area and the west. In order to analyze the temporal and spatial distributions of precipitation, the method of synthesizing vectors was used to calculate
the seasonality index of precipitation of 296 stations on Loess Plateau. Seasonality index of precipitation and rainy season directly influence water deficiency of crops.

The greatest lake period means that the lakes are in the stage of their maximum areas. As the paleolake shorelines are widely distributed in the lake basins on the Tibetan Plateau, the lake areas during the greatest lake period may be inferred
by the last highest lake shorelines. They are several even ten times larger than that at present. The occurence of maximum areas of lakes marked the very humid period on the Plateau and was also related to the stronger summer monsoon during that period.
