Regolith surface characteristics and response were examined over a three-year period in a badland area in a Mediterranean middle-mountain zone near Vallcebre (Eastern Pyrenees). The purpose of this study is to analyse the temporal patterns
of the response to simulated rainfall for the badland surfaces at Vallcebre in terms of runoff and sediment production. The dependence of this response on certain variables (day number, antecedent moisture and bulk density) is studied.
Characteritics badlands are incised into Plio-Pleistocene clays in Basilicata, creating steep, scarp slopes with knife-edge ridges (calanchi) and small dome-shaped forms (biancanes). This paper presents results from a 1997-2003 study into the rates
at which badland landforms evolve and erode in the uniform Plio-Pleistocene silty-clay lithology of southern Italy. The main controls on these rates are investigated, and the extent to which it is possible to extrapolate these rates over time is discussed

Geomorphological dynamics of subhumid mountain badland areas - weathering, hydrological and suspended sediment transport processes : A case study in the Araguás catchment (Central Pyrenees) and implications for altered hydroclimatic regimes
The Araguás catchment has been monitored since 2004. Evolution of the badland surfaces is related to regolith moisture level and temperature, closely associated with the season and slope exposure. The dynamics of weathering and erosion processes
affecting badland areas are the principal factors controlling geomorphological development, and the extreme hydrological and sedimentological responses of badlands are the main effects of such morphologies. Given these results, possible responses of badland

The AA. review 40 years of research in the Zin Valley Badlands in Israel to reconcile some of the conflicting results observed there and develop a perspective on the function of badlands as model landscapes. While the data collected in the Zin
Valley clearly confirm that spatial and temporal patterns of geomorphic processes and their interaction with topography and surface properties have to be understood, the AA. still conclude that the process of realizing complexity in the simple badlands

D'autre part
Uncertainty in the evaluation of sediment yield from badland areas : Suspended sediment transport estimated in the Araguás catchment (central Spanish Pyrenees)

Suspended sediment transport is probably the main process in sediment export from badland areas. In the Araguás catchment (central Pyrenees) there is a statistically significant positive linear relationship between maximum discharge and the maximum
with the corresponding discharge value. It is highlighted that the evaluation of sediment yield from badland areas using turbidity values involves significant uncertainty, and quantitative estimates of the errors involved are provided.

and vegetated surfaces. Parent materials properties are discussed with respect to the initiation and development of different badlands processes. In particular, clay dispersivity at different depths in the sample sites is examined as a well-known controlling
factor of accelerated erosion, thus providing some interesting clues for understanding the spatial variability of denudation rates in the considered badlands sites.
This work focuses on fossil organic carbon (FOC) fluxes due to chemical and mechanical weathering of marls in 2 experimental watersheds with typical badlands geomorphology (Draix watersheds, Laval and Moulin, Alpes de Haute Provence, France
(year 2002) exports at the outlet of the watersheds. Results show that FOC delivery is mainly driven by mechanical weathering. These high FOC fluxes from badlands are similar to those observed in tectonically active mountain catchments. At a global scale
, these findings suggest that erosion of badlands may contribute significantly to the transfer of FOC from continental surfaces to depositional environments.
